The Sitemap is one such SEO requirement that is essential for your blog organic search engine traffic. In the past I have talked about best sitemap plugins for WordPress & today one of the most popular WordPress plugins; Jetpack added the sitemap functionality.
Along with Sitemap functionality, the latest version of Jetpack has added more features such as Skype sharing button & social menu. In this guide, I will walk you through the Sitemap feature of Jetpack plugin & other notable features added by them in the recent past. If you are new to Jetpack plugin, you should read this beginners guide to Jetpack & watch the below video to learn more about it.
Once you are done going through the beginners guide to Jetpack, do check out this guide to learn about activating & deactivating any module on Jetpack. You need to know this to activate the Sitemap & other new modules of Jetpack.
How to generate Sitemap for WordPress using Jetpack plugin:
If you already have the plugin activated & running, ensure you are using the latest version of Jetpack. If you are not using Jetpack plugin, watch the above video & you will be compelled to start using this awesome free plugin.
Now, head to Jetpack > Settings & look for module call Sitemaps & activate it. Unlike other sitemap plugins for WordPress, here you don’t need to configure anything. This is a limitation for big WordPress sites but a new or medium size blog; you don’t need to configure anything apart from submitting your sitemap to search engines.
Once you have activated the sitemap module, you can access your sitemaps from these links:
Normal sitemap: yoursitename.com/sitemap.xml
- News Sitemap:
Personally, I’m a huge fan of SEO by Yoast sitemap feature & I recommend the same for sitemap feature. But, if you are configuring a WordPress blog without SEO by Yoast plugin, you can use this module for generating a sitemap for WordPress site.
As I said above the only downside is, this plugin doesn’t offer any configuration option, but that’s a good thing for bloggers who are not inclined towards technical SEO. This plugin also supports WordPress custom post type & for that, you can use this filter “jetpack_sitemap_post_types”. Here is the official help guide to get more info on configuring Jetpack sitemap module.
Other Imp. Modules added by Jetpack which you should know:
Skype sharing button:
This is a small addition in already available sharing module of Jetpack plugin. This is useful for blogs which target readers who prefer Skype. Blogs targeting developers & marketers should add Skype sharing button. In future, I would love to see Slack sharing button too.
This feature will let you display your social links as WordPress menu. You can read the documentation here.
Google plus badges:
If you haven’t added your Google plus profile badge or community badge (Helps in growing your number), you can now do it with Jetpack plugin. Though I’m uncertain how long Google plus would survive, as long it’s there, we can’t ignore it.
