In response to a veritable tsunami of backlash following the general election day (when a blatantly fake website got the top spot for Google search query “Final Election count 2016” on Nov. 12), Google is finally moving to curb the spread of misinformation. The search giant will ban fake news sites from AdSense – a bold move that seeks to cut the revenue streams for publishers of dubious content. The need for such a move became apparent after Buzzfeed published a report on Macedonia’s teenagers earning thousands of dollars of AdSense revenue through pro-trump websites. Using domain name registration records and online searches, BuzzFeed News identified over 100 active US politics websites being run from Veles. Major Veles’ origin sites: 365usanews.com Usapoliticsonline.com worldpoliticus.com usadailypolitics.com …and up to 140 others. These portals stole (aka scraped) pro-Trump content from other alt-right websites like ConservativeNews.com, The … [Read more...] about Google Cracks Down on Content Scrapers and Dubious News Aggregators
The internet is full of opportunities to make money, and blogging is one of the smartest and most ethical ways available. One misconception about blogging is that you need to work day and night to make money. There’s some truth to that if what you’re trying to do is create a name for yourself and/or build a brand. In my case, I didn’t … [Read more...] about How To Create A Niche Blog & Earn Money From AdSense
Google is looking at losses worth $750 million (and climbing) ever since 250 brand-advertisers pulled their ad spend following a Times Inc. report, which revealed Google’s seemingly uncaring stance on brand safety. The YouTube exodus itself could be real or just a show of concern; advertisers shouldn’t be crying foul after rooting for cheap inventory at scale (as programmatic promised) for years. It comes with a cost, and all the direct-response advertisers knew that going in. The possibility that their ads would end up against extremist content was part of the bargain. Uncertainty is the by-product of … [Read more...] about Google’s Brand Safety Loss is a Win for News Media Looking to Strike Direct Deals
