What’s up everyone! Today is Sunday, July 22nd and with that, we welcome the conclusion of another week, and the release of yet another “Weekly Byte of MMORPG News” article. So there’s quite a bit to talk about this week. With only a few older free-to-play MMORPGs on its roster, Funcom’s quarterly financial statement doesn’t typically offer as much to dissect as other companies’. Today’s statement, however, does offer some interesting news regarding a game that used to be pay-to-play, went free-to-play, and now will be (to a degree) pay-to-play again.Anarchy Online is getting an optional subscriber-only progression server, and it’s getting it soon. “Late February/March ’19” is the time frame mentioned in the financial report, and a full description of what’s to be offered can be found on the AO Facebook page: Anarchy Online’s 2019 server invites you on a voyage across space…and time! Start fresh with original content from launch, then experience additional expansions and level caps over time. Coming Soon! Six years ago on this very day (December 1, 2008) I moved a free blog hosted on BlogSpot to a self-hosted WordPress blog, and that's how ShoutMeLoud was born. The only thing I was sure of when I was making this transition was that I was moving to a better platform for my blog. Many of you who have read my blogging journey already know about the inception of ShoutMeLoud. If you missed reading about my journey, today I will be sharing how ShoutMeLoud came into existence, and how a variety of things happened that I never imagined would happen, even in my wildest dreams. Today, on ShoutMeLoud's 6th Anniversary, I am happier than words can express. I could never have imagined how this one blog could make the magic happen for me and so many others. If you check out the who.is details of … [Read more...] about This Indian Blogger 5 year Online journey Story will make you Thrilled
As this year’s GDC coverage is winding down, I am finally coming to the topic I saved for last: community. MMOs are more than just multiplayer. We attract the “alone together” people more than the “FPS hero” crowd in our comments section for a reason; MMOs are virtual worlds. They’re a digital space inhabited by other people. We may not talk to them, but we watch and listen. Maybe we engage, maybe we group, maybe we guild. We do stuff in a shared environment because we think, or hope, we’re part of a larger system. And this is why we need to talk about cross-platform communities and the strength of in-game, embedded community tools. As social media rises and mobile crashes against our PC fortress, increased console cross-play should be a reminder that we’re all gamers, and (some) developers are finally getting that. Bringing people together The panel on bridging cross-platform communities, held by Eric Cleaver (NetEase Games), … [Read more...] about GDC 2018: Bridging and embedding cross-platform online communities
