This week in why we can’t have nice things, a grown man apparently threatened to kill a little kid who beat him in Fortnite. Yesterday, New York’s News 12 reported on the arrest of the 45-year-old man, Michael Aliperti, who was arraigned by police for aggravated harassment and “acting in a manner to injure a child.” Police say he used his XBox to threaten to shoot the 11-year-old who’d just dunked on him in Fortnite, even telling the kid he knew where he went to school. Yikes. “Mr. Alperti did not directly threaten the school, but he did threaten the 11-year-old stating he knew where he went to school, so that was good enough for us,” police told the news station, noting that security patrols at the school have been increased. Hey, maybe just don’t threaten anybody over a freakin’ video game, especially one designed such that you almost never win anyway, then you’ll never find yourself in the middle of a school shooting threat … [Read more...] about Fortnite player arrested for threatening to kill an 11-year-old opponent

There’s exciting news for the 20-year-old Ultima Online this week, as the game’s latest newsletter announced an account-wide bank storage system. “Between Publish 100 and 101 we will be introducing a new item in the Ultima Store that many of you have seen – the Vault. A vault provides storage of 125 items which is shared across all characters on a server. The vault will be available on non-abyss ruleset shards only, so Endless Journey accounts on Siege & Mugen will have their bank box limit raised to 75. We are putting the finishing touches on this new storage option so be sure to keep an eye on UO.com for when we release the vaults for testing and eventual release.” If this works the way it sounds like it’ll work, it’ll be a huge boon for free-to-play players, who cannot own houses, meaning they have no way to swap loot between their characters without risking an old-fashioned and risky quick-swap on the floor of an inn. A shared vault (as … [Read more...] about Ultima Online is getting shared bank storage after 20 years, making F2P play more viable
MMO veterans might be familiar with The Realm (also known as The Realm Online), which was one of the first class of graphical online RPGs. While it’s been trucking along since 1996, creator Stephen Nichols accused the current owners of letting The Realm lapse into “deep neglect” and wants to remake the game for modern sensibilities. “2016 marks the 20-year anniversary of The Realm Online,” Nichols posted. “If you’re like me, you miss seeing the game thrive and grow as you know it can. I think it’s time for a remake of this internet classic with a fresh coat of paint and updated technology. Perhaps you agree. Yes, it’s time for a Realm remake, and I’m gonna make it happen.” To wit, Nichols put up a Go Fund Me page to help raise $50,000 to finance initial promotion and preproduction for this “spiritual successor” called The Realm: Reawakened (not to be confused with FFXIV: A Realm … [Read more...] about The Realm’s creator wants to remake this 20-year-old MMO
Epic Games is still doggedly pursuing supposed Fortnite cheaters. As we reported back in November, one of the defendants in Epic’s many lawsuits is a 14-year-old boy who stands accused of streaming and promoting cheats on his YouTube channel. At the time, his mother sent an informal letter to the court, arguing that her son didn’t actually develop cheats, that Epic had unlawfully released his name (as a minor), and that Epic was unfairly scapegoating him. As TorrentFreak (via GIbiz) noted, the court took that letter as a motion to dismiss (the family hadn’t responded officially otherwise). Epic has since refiled its complaint as a reply to that motion, claiming that it didn’t know the kid was a minor and that he had agreed to the EULA. While Epic has successfully taken down a few solo cheaters in court, this one isn’t really making anybody look good or feel safer, Epic. Meanwhile, ESPN reports that Fortnite e-sports outfit Team Secret has signed a … [Read more...] about Kids these days: Fortnite fights a 14-year-old in court, signs 13-year-old to e-sports team
Today is a special day. It’s the 8th anniversary of ShoutMeLoud. And all of this started with a conversation between two friends… Me (Harsh): Hey Dude, can I borrow your credit card!? Ankit: Why? Me: I want to buy hosting & a domain name for my blog. Ankit: You are mad! Are you sure about it? Me: Yes, I’m sure. And he gave me his credit card. It was on 30th November 2008 when I made my first ever online purchase (technically someone else made the purchase because it was his credit card). This purchase was for a domain name and hosting. It seems like yesterday since I launched ShoutMeLoud. It’s something which started from a one room flat and has become a global enterprise. It’s inspired, guided, and touched the lives of many people around the globe. Today, on 1st December, ShoutMeLoud turns eight years old, and it’s been an epic journey thus far. Something that I started out of passion has turned into an identity of itself. Here are some … [Read more...] about ShoutMeLoud is 8 Years Old!
