If you were around in the early days of MMOs, you probably played Ultima Online. How well we remember the "scary music" when a PK would range near as we were innocently chopping wood to try to craft some type of weapon. Ah, the good old days! The Broadsword team took time out to thank players for their participation and "to those who have left their mark on [the] humble virtual world!" 21 years ago Ultima Online changed the video game landscape forever. Sosaria spawned a virtual world where people could adventure together and forge friendships that would last a lifetime. Today we celebrate that legacy by wishing UO a very happy birthday and thanking all those Britannians who have left their mark on our humble virtual world. Long live UO! What are your favorite memories of Ultima Online! Let us know! Ultima Online is officially old enough to drink. It’s older than I was when I first started playing it all those years ago! Yep, the game that coined the term MMORPG turns 21 years old today. To celebrate, Broadsword released Publish 101, which as we’ve already covered delivered new detective quests, crafting, player-designed castles, and Halloween bits. It also unleashed 21st anniversary reward gifts for all characters who log into the game until November 18th. Those gifts include astronomy tools that allow players to view the night sky, create star charts, and discover constellations for unique character titles. Two years back, I did an in-depth video on the game, which stands up pretty well, so well that I haven’t seen much need to go back and redo it. The big thing that’s changed in the last two years is that Ultima Online went free-to-play, sort of, this past spring. I don’t personally recommend playing seriously as a free-to-play account as … [Read more...] about Wanna feel old? Ultima Online launched 21 years ago today
Ultima Online’s 21st birthday is creeping up on us here, which means the game is older than some of our readers and will soon be old enough to buy alcohol in the States. Feeling old, vets? Broadsword is planning hoopla in the form of a fall patch, publish 101, complete with anniversary gifts that introduce what’s effectively an astronomy system for the game, complete with an orrery and a telescope. “Telescopes can be used to view constellations and other celestial objects. Constellations can be charted using the Cartography Mapmaker’s Pen to create a star chart. Constellations can be named via the star chart. A star chart can be turned into Willebrord the Astronomer at the Moonglow Telescope Astronomer’s Tent. Players that are the first to discover a constellation will have their discovery logged in the constellation ledger and be given a special title and recipe. All constellations are shard unique. Visit the Astronomer’s tent at the Moonglow … [Read more...] about Ultima Online’s 21st anniversary patch introduces astronomy to Britannia
It’s almost been a year since Nintendo released Splatoon 2 on the Nintendo Switch. The frequent Splatfests – casual tournaments that decide winners by popularity, singleplayer performance, and team-based performance – have seen interesting tweaks of late, like a longer-form, team-elimination format that eliminates a voting option while letting everyone continue playing. North America and Europe experienced this with a Ninja Turtles-themed event. However, for its one-year anniversary on July 21st, the game will be hosting an event partially based on its new DLC: Squids vs. Octopi. Much like the small change to ink color, t-shirts, and other tweaks Nintendo’s done for other Splatfest, this one also comes with a twist: While DLC players have access to the octolings (octo-kids) once they complete the rather challenging new storyline (or allow one of the characters to “hack” any level you’re stuck on), the new Splatfest will let any player … [Read more...] about It’s the battle of the cephalopods in Splatoon 2 as it pits squids against octopi for its birthday bash
