Square Enix reported their quarterly earnings last night and the numbers were largely disappointing with MMO and mobile revenues flat quarter over quarter. MMO revenue for the last 3 months (July-September) came in at 6.4B yen ($56.3M) for the quarter and mobile came in at 19.7B yen ($173.4M). Next quarter's MMO revenues are expected to dip further as the next expansion to Final Fantasy XIV isn't expected to ship until the summer, though we should get an announcement about it at Fan Fest later this month. MMO Game Revenue: Mobile/Browser Game Revenue: The only bright spot in Square Enix's earnings this quarter was HD Game sales, which are essentially typical retail sales of console games. Capcom has released its financial statement for the first fiscal quarter of 2018. The company's earnings are up 46% from last year and profits are up 649% year-on-year. The success of Monster Hunter World is largely responsible for the huge earnings, with 8.3M units sold by quarter's end. This quarter, Monster Hunter: World (released in the previous fiscal year) maintained its popularity, backed by an expanding base of fans, and achieved cumulative sales of 8.3 million units total; also in the Digital Contents business, which has continued to growth steadily in recent years, the new Street Fighter 30th Anniversary Collection gave a solid performance, outperforming expectations. Further, in addition to healthy sales growth of high-margin catalog titles, the Digital Contents business drove earnings, resulting in the highest operating income for a first quarter in company history. Despite enormous success in its home market of China, Arena of Valor hasn't made the same inroads in the Western market. It isn't exactly a disaster though as the game has reached 1 million downloads on both iOS and Android combined since launching into beta in December 2017 according to mobile game analytics firm Sensor Tower. Revenue in Western markets totals $3 million since release. “Despite their popularity in China and Southeast Asia, mobile MOBAs have struggled to gain traction among U.S. smartphone gamers,” said Sensor Tower cofounder Oliver Yeh. “Looking at its first six months, Arena of Valor is making a strong showing in the genre, grossing as much in six months as one of its main rivals, Vainglory, did in 10 months following its transition to free-to-play.
