When it comes to notable years in the MMORPG genre’s history, 2008 stands out as one of the most significant. World of Warcraft’s debut onto the scene in 2004 caused an upheaval in ways far too numerous to go into detail here. Suffice to say that its overwhelming popularity drew the attention of game designers who looked at the staggering numbers of players and found themselves envious of the potential to grab a slice of that money pie. Many projects went into high gear following WoW’s launch, with plenty of them trying to copy the formula and structure that Blizzard established in the hopes of making it at least partially as big as that game. MMO Week in Review: Just Daybreak things (April 29, 2018)
Support Massively OP on PatreonWere you too busy gaming this week to pay attention to MMO news? Get caught up every Sunday evening with Massively Overpowered’s Week in Review! Arg, this week you guys. Daybreak is currently wading in the aftermath of one of the biggest unforced errors I’ve seen in the MMO genre in a decade, from inexplicably deciding to answer Russian sanction rumors by abruptly claiming it’s not owned by the company it’s said it’s been owned by for three years to laying off over 70 people in what was allegedly an unrelated H1Z1 crisis. It’s such a mess that you probably missed our the farewell to EVE Online’s Andie Nordren and our impressions pieces on Project Gorgon, Sea of Thieves, and Elder Scrolls Online’s Summerset. Oh yeah, and Belgium declared lockboxes illegal and threatened a bunch of international corporations with criminal penalties. No big thing. Allods Online: Pretty Good Game…and Free to Play
So, here’s the deal. Cryptic released a massive update for the Star Trek Online beta that went live a few days ago which made many improvements and fixed a few known issues. I was fortunate not to have experienced too many bugs myself, and it seems my biggest beef with the game (the fact our scanners were virtually useless during exploration missions) has been addressed. With my pre-order in and the Early Start Program to begin in less than a week on January 29th, I’ve taken my hands off the beta for the time being. Meanwhile, I set off window-shopping for a MMO I can play casually concurrently with my other game that I play casually (which right now happens to be Lord of the Rings Online) in order to help kill the time. You know, just browsing. That’s when a game called Allods Online caught my eye in the form of a closed beta key giveaway on Massively. Given that my propensity to resist beta key giveaways is near non-existent and the fact that 9 out of 10 comments I … [Read more...] about Allods Online: Pretty Good Game…and Free to Play
