They built and deployed several new powersets this year, including our first two healing and buffing sets. Five more powersets are under construction including and our first controller set. Internally, we’ve upgraded to Popcorn FX for impressive visual effects that don’t lag the game. Apotheosis City looks great now; adding a day/night cycle, civilians, and cars is a major accomplishment, and so is all of the sophisticated backend code that makes these features function well. This is the most commented-on subject for our supporters, and even our devs are often amazed when they see how well the different parts of the codebase work together. The game environment has gotten dramatically more advanced, as have our prototype mission maps. They polished and then tested our new combat system in a combat Alpha during February and March. It was a huge hit with the community; combat in SoH is easy to learn but hard to master, and the devs are having … [Read more...] about Ship of Heroes Releases 2018 Year-End Recap
Every year, I place Star Wars: The Old Republic on a scale and weigh it against the Bartle Taxonomy, giving the different aspects letter grades based on where I believe this MMORPG falls into the different quadrants. It’s the end of the year, BioWare, so let’s grade SWTOR. Bartle’s Taxonomy divides player activities along two axes. The first axis places the world focus against player focus, and the second axis places acting against interacting. As with many taxonomies, this creates four quadrants. The interacting and player quadrant is the Socializer quadrant; the opposite of that is the Achiever quadrant. The acting and player side is called the Killer quadrant by Bartle, but I like to say that it’s more competitor than killer because the connotation in “Killer” is griefing. Although griefing does fall in the extreme corner of this quadrant, the whole quadrant isn’t about that. And lastly, the interacting and world quadrant is where … [Read more...] about Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR’s year-end report card for 2018
Over the last few days I have been doing a number of posts to review the year that is ending, and with today being the last day of 2018… I thought I would probably do another one. This time however it is probably going to downshift considerably and get into personal territory. It was an odd year for me specifically and quite frankly… not an amazing one. My world had been fairly hectic and as a result it has trickled down to effecting how I view this blog and the games I end up playing. This was the year that I took over as Manager of my section at work being comprised of three different subject areas. That means that on any given day I am responsible for roughly fifteen other lives, not to mention a handful of individuals that may not actually report to me but regularly seek advisement. Now this is something I have steadily moved towards over the last decade, but even with that… I am not sure I was quite prepared for the stress level increase. … [Read more...] about Year End Wall of Text
It is done! As of this weekend, I have completed my overall 2018 goal of leveling all of my lagging-behind jobs to 50 on my main! Woo! Warrior was the final job I needed, and once that dinged, a flow of achievements came in. I also finished up the job quest for Warrior and that got me another few achievements and a title for completing all of the job quests up to level 50. While I’m not super serious about pushing these jobs to 60 yet (that might be next year’s goal), I did start doing a few beast tribe quests on my Astro over this weekend just to get things started. I don’t know if I’ll be super focused on this right now, but it would be nice to have most of my jobs in a good spot once the expansion comes out next year. Unexpected Dragoon While I was out doing beast tribe quests, I noticed that the next checkpoint for a Dragoon job quest was out in the same zone. I’d run across the start of the level 60-70 line and picked it up weeks … [Read more...] about FFXIV: Year-End Goal Achieved!
