A year ago, MMO fans were thrilled to find out that Funcom had had its best quarter in ages thanks to the early access launch of Conan Exiles. The first quarter of 2018 wasn’t quite as huge, but you can be sure next quarter will be, as Funcom says it’s already sold 1.4M copies of the game, a million of those before May 8th – which Funcom notes is as many as Age of Conan sold in its first three years of life, making it Funcom’s “bestselling game of all time.” It’s expected to launch on PS4 in Japan this summer, alongside the game’s first DLC in June. Age of Conan, by the way, gets a note for its Saga of Zath progression server that ran throughout winter and spring; the studio says it was “successful in engaging players and increasing revenue.” Little ink is spilled over Secret World Legends beyond a note about Dawn of the Morninglight and a promise for “more content and events […] going forward.” Anarchy … [Read more...] about Funcom Q1 2018 financials: Conan Exiles will be the studio’s ‘bestselling game of all time’

I’m already old and bitter when it comes to survival games. I’ve killed zombies, dinosaurs, infected bears, maybe even infected dinosaurs, and people. Lots of people. Even for food, and I don’t mean apples. I’ve been been forced to hand over my clothes in the freezing cold, drowned myself to escape imprisonment, and endured beaches full of dead, starved naked men on a PvE server that was unable to provide food for its citizens. It’s been the worst parts of The Walking Dead when I’ve been looking for the “It’s going to be OK!” moments. All this during what’s largely proven to be an unending “Early Access” period. To say I’m critical of the survival genre at this point may be an understatement. By all accounts, someone might think I hate them, and they’d be half right. I hate most of what I’ve played. There’s cool stuff, but it’s like finding a $1 bill in what you hope was a … [Read more...] about GDC 2018: Rend is looking to ‘WoW’ the survival genre
Have fresh start progression servers ever been more popular? In the last year alone, scores of MMORPGs – especially long running ones – have released new servers that roll back to the early days of its beginnings to offer players a walk down memory lane. Age of Conan has their Saga of Zath server which ends in May, ArcheAge released two new fresh start servers for both NA and EU, while RIFT has gain massive success with it’s Prime server. And let’s not forget, World of Warcraft are going to be releasing WoW Classic as well, which millions of players will no doubt jump into to experience vanilla all over again. With the hype and positivity surrounding fresh start servers in addition to the benefits it brings to classic MMORPGs, which games could use fresh start servers in 2018 to give the game and its player population a boost? The Lord of the Rings Online LOTRO’s version of Middle Earth has just entered its 11th year, and the game has tons of content to … [Read more...] about Top MMORPGS In 2018 That Could Use Fresh Start Progression Servers
This is, bar none, the column I hate doing most on a regular basis. None of the games I highlight in here is something that I actually like pointing to; they’re games that people like, games that may very well be someone’s absolute favorites, and yet they’re also games where the future looks difficult if not outright bad. A cloudy future is never a good thing, and this particular column does not make it all right. But we’re still here in the early days of 2018, and that means it’s still the right time to look at the games we might not see around next year. For various reasons, these are the games that already look like they’re in trouble, instead of absolute face-shattering surprises like a couple of the shutdowns last year. 1. WildStar Another year, another prediction of doom? Not a happy one, of course, but one that still seems apropos. This is a game I really enjoy but that never got the traction it needed to make itself sustainable, and its … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: The MMOs with the most uncertain futures in 2018
