Let me start by sharing with you what I don’t do: I don’t buy every new MMO on the market I no longer feel a strong interest in playing on the first day of Alpha Much of this has to do with acquired skepticism. A decade ago, I used to get super excited about upcoming MMORPGs. And then I experienced those games losing their playerbase in droves while the developers/publishers failed to meaningfully address the concerns of the community. This happened with Warhammer Online, Aion, Allods Online, RIFT, and SWTOR. The collapses of WAR, RIFT, and SWTOR were particularly personally disappointing to me, because I saw so much promise in each of those games. WAR had epic battlegrounds (aka scenarios) and RVR, and you could level up through PVP. RIFT had the most flexible class customization system ever – for a given class you could choose 3 out of 9 talent trees – and the battlegrounds were superbly designed. SWTOR was so much fun and felt epic – the writing and … [Read more...] about Is It Worth Your Time to Alpha Test?

The Pantheon Twitter account strikes again with asking good questions. This time they ask: How long does it take you to create a character, are you someone who takes a while to get it just right or do you blow through and create any old character just to get into the game as fast as you can? That's an awesome question with multiple avenues to explore. First, it depends on character creation options. Stats & Starter Choices If an MMO has starter stats or some form of decision making process right at character creation, then I'm going to take some time thinking things over. In fact, the idea of picking my starting traits, stats, skills, etc., has been the source of much stress in my life. The decision to customize my character's performance and even major developmental direction before I even play the game has been a big reason why I sometimes won't even pick up and play some RPGs. I remember wracking my brain for HOURS over my stats and deity chose in EverQuest. Where do I put … [Read more...] about How Long Does it Take You to Make Your Character?
There are two basic reactions I’ve seen to people who fear that their favorite MMO is going to shut down. Not people who know, people who fear it. People who see the writing that seems to be upon the wall, but with no official word. Some people fall into hardcore evangelist mode, pushing the game to everyone and trying to play as much of it as possible while the game is still alive. Others basically write the game off ahead of time and warn friends not already playing to not start, because it’s going to die in five months. I’ve seen it happen with games from Final Fantasy XIV to WildStar, and the only game that I’ve played intensely that seems to have avoided this is City of Heroes (which actually did shut down, but absolutely no players saw it coming until it was happening). And I think it’s interesting in that situation whether you tend to do your best to push the game’s number’s up or just try to accept the death preemptively. So what about … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: How much does fear of an MMO shutdown affect your playtime?
