WRUP: Recent movies that I have watched edition

Quigley Down Under: Sometimes you have a movie that you only half-remember from when you were younger and you don’t really know if it was actually any good? This one was, though, a Western set in the Australian outback that manages to effectively deal with the inherent issues with the Western genre by moving the setting and changing the heart of the narrative in some smart ways. Runaway: By contrast, this one does not hold up, at all. I liked it when I was younger but the performances are stiff, the camerawork weak, and the interesting premise that it starts out with of a world wherein robots are common but not necessarily humanoid is sort of dropped and replaced with something way more bland quickly. Oh, well. Colossal: Actually I could have written a whole intro just about this movie because it’s amazing and I think basically no one saw it; I was told it existed and found it was on Hulu, and dear lord what an amazing film.
