“I’d like to thank April Fools Guy for setting off what’s sure to be two solid weeks of hand-wringing over the time/place etiquette of criticism in video games.” This was my immediate takeaway from the Diablo What’s Next panel at BlizzCon yesterday, and my sole misjudgment there was probably that it’ll last only two weeks. As we wrote last night, the Diablo community has gone into near total meltdown mode over the announcement of Diablo Immortal, which was positioned in the BlizzCon opening ceremonies as the big announcement but basically came off as the equivalent of “be sure to drink your Ovaltine” as it wasn’t Diablo 4 at all but a NetEase mobile-only spinoff. Not only did one fan take it out on the devs on stage during the subsequent panel, asking Team Diablo whether the game was an April Fools’ joke, but we’ve now seen vote-bombing on YouTube, a petition demanding the game be canceled, and Twitter wars over gamer … [Read more...] about BlizzCon 2018: Blizzard defends Diablo Immortal, hints at more Diablo projects on the way

We are a long way removed from the days of Final Fantasy XI, a game where you would not even consider leveling if you didn’t have at least three hours of free time… and probably more if you weren’t trying to level a tank or healer. Now, these days MMOs are far more speedy and efficient, with the overall design goal shifting to letting you get in, get something worthwhile, and get out. This is not a bad thing, but it does raise the question of which games offer the best experience on limited schedules. Sure, I can do quite a bit with just an hour a day in Final Fantasy XIV or World of Warcraft, but those are also games I know very well. And they’re going to demand at least that hour, more if I want to really make progress. By contrast, I know I can get some mission progress made in Star Trek Online with about half an hour… but that’s just storyline missions. And games like Kritika Online seem tailor-made to drop in and drop out, but is that worth it? … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: Which MMO gives the best experience with the least time to play?
My photo travelogue through the savage world of Age of Conan continues! With the Rise of the Godslayer expansion live, for the first time in this screenshot series I’ll be posting images taken from beyond the Silk Road! Yeah, I seem to have this obsession with posing my characters in fields of tall grass. Welcome to the Gateway to Khitai. My Khitan character was dumped here right after she finished her destiny quests on the island of Tortage, but she’s not home yet. Technically still within Hyrkania, this region is one of the five new zones added with the expansion, and is a level 20-40 area. My first impression was, “Wow, this place is bloody huge!” But perhaps it was only an illusion, caused by the abundance of wide-open space. After all, I would say there are several playfields in-game right now that I would consider enormous…except they feel much smaller when I’m constantly running into the side of a mountain or falling off a cliff. … [Read more...] about /Gawk – Far To The East Edition
It looks as if the upcoming Pokemon Let’s Go games are affecting Pokemon Go once again. I doubt it’s a coincidence that the next Community Day Pokemon is Eevee, the second, non-Pikachu version of the upcoming Switch games. Even better, Niantic may finally be listening to players (including our staffers), as Community Day will be held on two days this time: August 11 and 12. As some people have noticed, the text mentions that Eevee and its evolutions will receive a new move, in addition to the longer lures and bonus stardust for catching Pokemon. There’s just one problem: Umbreon, the Dark-type Eevee, can be obtained only through the naming trick during the day. Espeon and Umbreon are normally earned by walking an Eevee 10 kilometers or more and evolving it when it’s your buddy, but the time of day matters: It becomes Espeon during the day and Umbreon during the night. As Community Day is only three hours long and … [Read more...] about Pokemon Go 2 Day Community Event for Eevee, tons of content this weekend and on the horizon
This week in MMO crowdfunding, Camelot Unchained is in the home stretch before open beta. Yes, really, open beta. This is happening, people! Clear your 4th of July! As for live Kickstarters, TemTem is up to $320K and counting, far past its original goal with still a week left to go. Most recently, donors unlocked Nintendo Switch play and the replay system. Clubs (guilds) are set to unlock at $400K. And yes, the game is now registered on Steam. The Flower of Knighthood, on the other hand, abandoned its Kickstarter in its final hours, seeing it would not complete. The devs haven’t commented on their next move just yet. Meanwhile, Shroud of the Avatar was hit with layoffs, EVE Online got its revenge on Star Citizen, Chronicles of Elyria posted lore, Albion Online rolled out a small update, and Crowfall admitted it’s delaying soft launch into 2019 but showed off its procedural world generation. Finally, Fractured prepped for Kickstarter – get ready to … [Read more...] about Make My MMO: SOTA sees layoffs, Crowfall sees delay, Star Citizen sees shade, and Camelot Unchained sees beta on the horizon (June 23, 2018)
