2019 will bring more FPS games to us, but for right now, what are the best FPS games to play for some fun action alone or with some buddies? Here’s our picks. Insurgency: Sandstorm What started out as a mod has turned into a fully fledged FPS game that players have come to love. Insurgency’s rise to fame is down to just how good the original’s gameplay was. And because of that, we saw the sequel release this month, Insurgency: Sandstorm. Simply put, it’s excellent. It offers FPS lovers team-based tactics and objective oriented gameplay that doesn’t feel boring at all. It’s level of realism and fun is also through the roof, but more than most, its hardcore depiction of the conflict in the middle east is sure to garner many fans. It’s currently 10% off on Steam right now. Call of Duty: Black Ops 4 One of the most popular FPS franchises returned this year, and COD’s latest installment surpassed $500 million in sales in its first three days. … [Read more...] about The Best FPS Games To Play Right Now

The past couple of weeks has been wild as we dispatched writers to GDC in San Francisco and PAX East in Boston to gather up and bring back everything they could on the MMORPGs large and small on the spring convention circuit. In fact, as I type this, we’ve got Brendan in Reykjavik for EVE Fanfest too! So for this week’s Overthinking, we’re rounding up our coverage and then reflecting on the best and worst as we pick out what most excites, surprises, and disappoints us: First the roundups, then our thoughts. Everyone knows that the various people portraying characters at PAX East are just there to portray a character. That’s not who they really are. Just because an attractive young woman is dressed up as a character in a way that cleverly circumvents the event’s ostensible policy against “booth babes” does not mean that she is actually a bounty hunter, for example. (She could be, though. We’ve all got side hustles.) So it should come as no great surprise that the Guild Wars 2 griffon was itself playing a part, just like the other actors on the floor. I was lucky enough to sit down for an interview with “Feathers” (it specified that its real name would break my eardrums) on the show floor, and since I was sitting very still to avoid triggering its instinctive hunting reflexes, I could also record everything it said perfectly. So please, to cap off our PAX East experience, enjoy my interview with this mythical creature of sand and wind. Massively … [Read more...] about PAX East 2018: An interview with the big griffon statue
Ashes of Creation will hit alpha one by the end of the year, Intrepid Studios announced today during its panel at PAX East. The game slipped into a phase it’s calling “alpha zero” back in December. “The first phase of this public test for all Alpha One level backers will focus primarily on combat, hosting large amounts of players for our siege and warfare systems,” says the studio. “Leading up until the start of Alpha 1, we will still be inviting more players into the Alpha Zero Friends & Family tests.” Massively OP is at PAX East this week and slated to meet with Intrepid tomorrow, so stay tuned for more coverage, and check out the new PAX video below! Yes, it’s that time again, time to drive up to Boston and take part in the annual collection of games and poorly laid-out convention halls that makes up PAX East. There are panels to be attended if you can get in line early enough, merch to be bought, and most importantly for our purposes, interviews to be had. Are you excited? Well, maybe not! Sometimes it feels like the best information about MMOs comes out of small conventions devoted to specific games (like EVE Online, Final Fantasy XIV, and World of Warcraft, although that last one is arguably not small in the least). Yet there’s always a bunch of MMO stuff at the various booths just the same; the convention is just more often a time to reach out to players and press who may not follow MMOs studiously, so that tends to be the focus for presentation. But enough explaining the situation; let’s turn the microphone over to you, as it were. Is there anything about MMOs you hope to see at PAX East? A game or two that … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: We’re headed to PAX East – what do you most want to see?
