I had looked forward to Staff Lieutenant Kaidan Alenko’s romance arc from the very first moment I encountered him aboard the Normandy…until I actually had a conversation with him. This man clearly has a lot of baggage but not a whole lot of personality. Still, while I may rag on Kaidan a lot, he does have many redeeming qualities that make him quite endearing, provided you can get past his whole angsty biotics-experimentation-ruined-my-life shtick. Consider how the man has had enough traumatic experiences in his life to make him a murderous psychopath three times over, but instead, his experiences have actually taught him open-mindedness and self-restraint. He is also extremely loyal to those he cares about, both as a soldier and as a lover, and a part of me is already dying a little inside when I think about how I’ll cheat on him in the sequel…well, no, not really. … [Read more...] about A Post Dedicated to my Bioware Boyfriends

Hyperspace Beacon: I wasn’t going to talk about Anthem, but I think I should
A certain point of view Tell me if you relate to this: Someone tells you a story that might be difficult to hear. Let’s say that someone hit your friend’s dog. Obviously, your friend would be distraught and focused on caring for the dog. He tells you the story of how he heard the dog getting hit, ran around to the front of his house, saw the car that hit the dog speeding away, and immediately checked on the dog. He explains in great detail about the dog’s injuries and how scared he was. He tells you about making sure that he could move the dog before placing him into his car with the help from neighbors. It is super moving and very tragic. … [Read more...] about Hyperspace Beacon: I wasn’t going to talk about Anthem, but I think I should
Perfect Ten: The unique pitfalls of licensed MMOs
The problem, in short, is that any story arc in which you play a Federation ship facing down the Doomsday Weapon is fundamentally going to be the same as the first episode in which a Federation ship faced down the Doomsday Weapon. It’s a story you’ve seen before, and in all likelihood it was a story resolved then; STO had to invent additional such Weapons to justify them becoming an adversary. It’s all of the mechanics of the original story, but at best it’s just with a dearth of characters who have the same emotional attachment. At worst, it’s a matter of pretending you don’t know the answer to the problem because you saw the original. … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: The unique pitfalls of licensed MMOs
Perfect Ten: The MMOs with the most unclear futures in 2017
5. Guild Wars Nobody is expecting much development from the original Guild Wars at this point, since the title has been in maintenance mode for a while (and real maintenance mode, not “we’ll update every month” maintenance mode). But I wonder when the servers will actually go dark for this one, too. Hopefully never because there’s plenty of fun to be had in the original game, but I can’t help but be nervous about that. … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: The MMOs with the most unclear futures in 2017
Massively Overthinking: Unpopular MMORPG opinions
Carlo Lacsina (@UltraMudkipEX): I don’t like FFXIV’s stories; it always plays it safe. No matter how “dark” the story gets, it will backtrack into some kind of kumbaya moment when everyone’s somehow forgiven and we have a nice safe “reset.” If anyone’s watched the anime Murai-Nikki, it’s got a great plot but the ending is so bad because it ends with a “reset.” I hate those kind of endings, and it makes going through FFXIV’s questline feel pointless. … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: Unpopular MMORPG opinions
