The schedule for Lord of the Rings Online’s special events keeps us hopping most of the year-round, as Standing Stone Games weaves major festivals, bonus periods, and smaller activities (such as Hobnanigans) into each month. But it’s the former that I want to discuss today, especially as we’re just coming off of a Yule Festival encore and heading into the 12th anniversary celebrations. Since it’s always great fun to rank things, today I wanted to do just that with LOTRO’s festivals. Which is the worst, which is the best, and how do they all rank up compared to each other? And what could SSG do to bolster the underperforming events to bring them up to par? Let’s take a look! Worst: Summer Festival With each of the major festivals these days there is a centerpiece activity that serves as the main draw of the event — all except for the Summer Festival, which doesn’t really have one. It’s not a bad festival, it’s just one that is … [Read more...] about LOTRO Legendarium: Ranking LOTRO’s festivals from worst to best

Get Guild Wars 2 Path of FireYou know what Guild Wars 2 could use right about now? How about a festival? Yeah! How about the return of a festival that’s been dormant for years? Yassss! How about the Festival of the Four Winds? Bringit! “On July 24, a big summer celebration is blowing in—the Festival of the Four Winds! A collaborative effort by Her Royal Majesty Queen Jennah of Kryta, the Zephyrites, the Lionguard, and even the Black Lion Trading Company, this annual festival brings back popular summertime activities in both Divinity’s Reach and the Labyrinthine Cliffs.” As it did way back in 2014, the Festival offers numerous minigames; the wiki lists dolyak flying, the Sanctum Spring race, and the Aspect Arena battle, and it’s a good bet we’ll see some of those brought up to date with the game’s current mechanics (like mounts). ArenaNet’s official blurb this year also mentions hot air balloons (wheee) and the Boss Blitz, whose … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2 is bringing back the Festival of the Four Winds next week – it’s the next best thing to Cantha

It must be frustrating to be one of my characters. Egads, the uncertainty that they have to live with, not knowing day to day if I’ll grow bored or dissatisfied with them and just kick them to the curb like yesterday’s jam. There’s never any assurance, never any guarantee — the Sword of Damocles always hangs over their neck. So one has to imagine that for a person with limited gaming time, multiple other titles for distraction, and playing on a time-unlocking progression server, I’d perhaps be persuaded not to reroll and OH HEY I DID IT AGAIN. Because, look, there’s greener grass. I don’t even want to explain why. Long story short, I missed my Cleric, I wanted a DoT build, and… yeah. Why not reset one’s progress when the clock is always ticking? Trion doesn’t care. Trion sends out a company-wide memo when I reroll, because that’s another month’s subscription in the can. Buy Scott Hartsman another corgi. Anyway. … [Read more...] about RIFT: Hey look! Greener grass!
This is the full version of entries that have been published in the last week! I just thought it might be nicer to have everything in one huge entry instead of in separate ones (either way: You can find all entries in the category labelled “rift vs. lotro vs. wow” on the right). The topic I wrote some time ago about “Rift vs. LotRO” is still getting readers almost every day. Unfortunately, it is probably not the kind of topic they were looking for. So, since I’ve played both games (at least for a little while), I thought I would make an elaborate posting about those games. I’m also going to throw in World of Warcraft because, apart from playing it as well, the big majority of MMO gamers have played the game or know something about the game, at least. :) (After starting to write this, I realised how long this entry would be in the end and decided to split it into different topics to be posted separately. So expect a posting every day for the next few … [Read more...] about Rift vs. LotRO vs. World of Warcraft – a closer look at all three MMOs (all entries in one)
