Korean MMORPG Astellia has begun the second phase of its closed beta tests this week, in which players can test out the PvP map and also check out the cash store. However, if this if your first time hearing about the game, what is it exactly? Here’s a rundown. Astellia by Studio 8 and Barunson and EA is the next MMORPG to hit the global market this summer. While the CBT 1 access is granted to pre-order packages of the highest tier, many have gotten in with keys being offered regularly on social media. Based on our experiences with the game so far, here’s what you need to know about Astellia if you’re wondering about the game. Your Goal Is To Collect and Raise Astels Astellia is a theme-park MMORPG at its core, filled with the usual quest hub crawls from town to town, region to region until you hit the max level of 50. Along the way with your chosen class, players will collect Astels. This are tiny companions, each designed in a way that mimics a combat class. They … [Read more...] about New MMORPG 2019: Is Astellia Worth Playing When It Launches?

When MMOs were really getting big, I spent more time playing text-based MUDs, and continue to play them even to this day. Far more time was spent on them back then, however, so I was very glad to see that a browser-based text game is in development, Gemini Station. Gemini Station takes place on the titular space station, where players get mixed up into the political affairs of our star system and play the role of pilots/cargo pilots. It reminded me of a great deal of Wing Commander: Privateer in that way, but with a bit more complexity to it. I will say that Gemini Station starts pretty slow, and if you don’t take the time to read as many things as possible, you can, unfortunately, make the game much slower; that’s what I did. You start the game off with a ship, and a bit of money and the way to make more money the most reliable way is by buying cargo on a planet and selling it on a separate planet. What I did, is I bought the canisters of gas on Jupiter, without taking the … [Read more...] about Gemini Station Preview – Text Games Are Still Alive
Now that I’m helming Not So Massively, I feel a stronger compulsion to delve into games like ARPGs and shooters so that I can speak with more authority in this column. Luckily enough, Steam held a free weekend for Crate Entertainment‘s ARPG Grim Dawn a few weeks back, providing me the perfect opportunity to expand my knowledge of the ARPG genre. Grim Dawn hadn’t really caught my eye previous to then, but I had a good enough time during the free weekend, so I decided to pick up the game and its expansions during the accompanying sale. I was unsure how to discuss Grim Dawn, given it’s been out for a while. Should I deliver my thoughts after finishing the base game and write about the expansions separately or not at all, or finish everything and talk about it all at once? I’ve decided to go with the former, for reasons I will explain soon. For now I’ll say that as of this writing I’ve finished the base game and gotten as far as the first quest hub … [Read more...] about Not So Massively: Jumping into Grim Dawn in 2019

While roaming around the blogosphere yesterday I stumbled onto a post on Cheap Boss Attack. This was apparently spurred on by a twitter thread that I did not originally see from a “The Well-Red Mage”. The idea is pretty straight forward… go through the list of video game releases by year and determine what your favorite game for every year you have been alive was. I thought this might be an interesting exercise so I took part in coming up with my list last night. The only problem that I immediately saw is that I am part of what is realistically the first generation who can actually do this successfully. The first commercial video games came out in 71/72 ish and even by the time I was born the list of available games in 76 was pretty short. I of course had to rely on the wonder of wiki pages in trying to sort out what games were released in what years… and unfortunately these pages were not exactly the most complete … [Read more...] about Games While I’ve Been Alive
