the Elder Scrolls Online PTS and folks are probably putting it through its paces, exploring every nook and cranny of the Khajiit’s ancestral homeland. In the meantime, ZeniMax gives fans an in-depth look at the new zone and the cat people that inhabit it in a recent dev blog. Elsweyr itself is a massive zone made up of craggy desert canyons, windswept Savannas, and dense jungles. “In general, when planning a new zone, we always try to take multiple different real-world inspirations and mash them together,” says Senior Concept Artist Joseph Watmough. “For Elsweyr’s grasslands for example, we looked at West Africa, and for the southern more tropical parts, we looked at southern India, Indonesia, and Thailand. This gives the player an experience that’s rooted in reality, but also something a little different.” As for the Khajiiti, the team says that they were careful to avoid negative stereotypes that came with the cat people’s reputation … [Read more...] about Elder Scrolls Online Spotlights Elsweyr And The Khajiit In Their Latest Dev Blog

It stands to reason that if you are willingly entering a survival sandbox, then you are going to be interacting with the wildlife almost constantly. After all, they are good sources of meat, materials, and bragging rights, and they probably resent you for your mere presence. Before you risk virtual life and limb in these animal encounters, the sci-fi sandbox MMO Population Zero would like to introduce you to the wildlife at a safe distance. In a new blog post, the team goes over some of the creatures that you will encounter earlier in the game, such as the adorable Yutts, armored Merids, and toxic Kso. “From the very beginning of your journey, you might encounter dangerous bloodthirsty monsters, stone giants and small creatures that can be both friendly allies and extremely hostile aggressors if you rub them the wrong way,” the team said. … [Read more...] about Population Zero takes you on a wildlife safari in its latest dev blog
The following is all only lightly edited from actual speaking. “Yeah, let’s go play some World of Warcraft! I’m excited!” “Oh, hey, I hadn’t seen the cinematic before now.” “Wow, I wish that all of the stories in this game didn’t end with raids.” “I hate how much of the story is locked behind the novels and stuff I don’t care about and never want to watch.” “Oh, right, I can’t just play, I have to download addons because the default UI is garbage.” “Ugh, why is it so hard to install these things…” “Wait, did they seriously change the interface?” “Of course, my talent choices have been reset again.” “God, every single time I get back to this game I have to learn everything all over like it’s sort of the same game but not really.” “Looks like tonight is just going to be sorting out the garbage that no longer matters because … [Read more...] about WRUP: The journey of my wife going back to World of Warcraft edition
This summer is — you have no idea — crazy busy for me. More so than any other summer I’ve experienced up to this point in my life, and it’s probably not going to slow down for a while. So while I have no time or energy to devote to running any sort of community event, it’s very gratifying to see Belghast crank up Blaugust once more. This “festival of blogging” that starts up in August is a way to encourage, promote, and mentor gaming and MMO bloggers — especially new or lapsed ones that need some encouragement in getting into the groove of (semi-)regular blogging. According to Belghast, “What I propose is a month of mildly structured posting and developing a strong mentorship community among those of us who are still out there doing it on a regular basis. Lets help grow that next generation of bloggers and help them get started in a journey that honestly has meant more to me than I can adequately put into words.” There … [Read more...] about Join the MMO blogging revolution! One of the things I have failed miserably at lately is keeping up with my blog feed. During the heyday of Google Reader I was a voracious consumer of gaming blogs of all stripe, and regularly read through everything in my backlog of posts. Stuff happened and my attempt to expand my horizons when I was writing a column on the blogosphere saw my feed ballooning to some 700 sites… a good number of them posting about things that never really interested me on a personal level. As a result I find myself spending less time reading blog posts and tend to catch up in a flurry of reading on the weekends. That said I did end up doing a strafing run on Feedly yesterday afternoon and stumbled across a post from Tobold posing the question of whether or not the MMO Blogosphere is still alive. The short answer is yes, the community is still very much alive. The long answer however is a lot more complicated. While there are still a ton of … [Read more...] about MMO Blogging Dead?
