If yesterday was the day for supportive Twitter hashtags, today is the day for anger and action, or so says pro-union group Game Workers Unite, which this afternoon began a Twitter campaign calling for the firing of ArenaNet President Mike O’Brien. As we’ve been chronicling, ArenaNet – the famed MMORPG studio behind the popular Guild Wars franchise – laid off over 100 people from its 400-person headquarters yesterday in a move it said was dictated by owners at NCsoft. Workers assigned to Guild Wars 2 as well as those building the now-canceled unannounced gamers were affected, and today’s GW2 update was postponed as the studio has been closed for two days of regrouping, though the execs have suggested the core game will continue at least through its fifth season of content. We updated our list of some of the devs being let go as recently as this morning; they include some extremely well-known developers, including Gaile Gray, Josh Foreman, and Matthew … [Read more...] about Unionization group Game Workers Unite calls for firing of ArenaNet’s Mike O’Brien
Campaigning speech for student council
A couple of weeks ago, Worlds Adrift announced that it was rolling up a player council, and I did one of those tilt my head to the side thingies and sighed. In my write up, I even pointed out these councils usually have all the power of a student council at a junior high school, which is to say, not much. I didn’t even bother to point out they can also be super corrupt, prone to leaks, and dominated by particular player factions; anybody who’s ever peeked into EVE Online’s CSM already knows that. The ego-inflation of the council members and cheap community appeasement without much dev effort seem to be the chief products. Now, MOP’s Larry Everett, who served as a Star Wars Galaxies senator many years ago, might disagree with me; I’m sure he can point to instances when he and his fellows agitated for just the right thing at the right time and got SOE to implement something great. But simply having an embedded community team to call for and collect … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: Should all MMORPGs have EVE-style player councils?
Longtime MMORPG fans will know that the concept of player councils and senates, liaisons between the playerbase and the developers, have long been a part of the MMO landscape, be they in games like EVE Online and Star Wars Galaxies or Lord of the Rings Online. Longtime MMORPG fans will also know that the impact of these types of councils is about as weighty as a junior high student council. Worlds Adrift is now joining their number, according to a new Bossa Studios post this weekend. The first batch of 10 on the “Community Cloud Council,” Bossa says, have been hand-picked to “help streamline feedback” from the playerbase. “These players have been very helpful to Bossa, time and time again giving very honest and constructive feedback on development,” the company explains. “These guys know every inch of the game, are aware of all the ins and outs of the mechanics, have provided thorough bug reports, and kept above board when dealing with some … [Read more...] about Worlds Adrift announces its first player council, says the playerbase will pick the next round
Play EVE Online for freeWant politics out of your games? What about politicians? And do you mean it literally? Because… they walk among us. Kotaku put out a piece over the weekend on Brian Schoeneman, one of the many players currently running for positions on EVE Online’s Council of Stellar Management. It’s basically the student council for the game, only the members could potentially wield considerable influence over the game and have traditionally been flown to Iceland to meet with CCP to advocate for the playerbase, or at least its more powerful factions. So yeah, basically like real life. Schoeneman, however, made headlines because of his day job: Kotaku characterizes him as a “career politician” and lobbyist. “If you replace ‘government’ with CCP, ‘union members’ with the playerbase, and ‘country’ with the game world, I’m already basically a CSM,” he reportedly said. “It’s literally my … [Read more...] about A real-life lobbyist is running for the EVE Online CSM
