When it comes to MMORPGs, free to play has never been more prevalent in the genre. There’s dozens upon dozens of free entry MMO games that allows you to jump into the world and creep toward the end-game without spending too much. Of course, for most games, there’s always a catch. Things like additional content in DLCs, Expansions and of course micro-transaction exists. So in a way, there’s no completely free game out there. However, on a tight budget, there’s still some solid titles out there that will offer you tons of fun for the free entry. Here’s our picks for the best MMORPGs to play if you’re not keen on spending money. 1. Star Wars: The Old Republic There was a period in time that SWTOR wasn’t actually considered free to play friendly at all. Most saw BioWare’s monetization of the game as greedy, and with a massive fan base like Star Wars, corporations would obviously want to cash in on that. Today, SWTOR has dialed back on some of … [Read more...] about Top 5 MMORPGs To Play On A Tight Budget

Last month on /r/mmorpg, there was a thread about finding MMOs that will make you feel like a kid again. You can probably guess the kind of discussion that followed: There was a lot of the usual chatter about how you can never really go back again, that what you’re looking for is a time not a place, that the magic is gone and can’t ever be recaptured, and so on. I used to buy a lot of those ideas; I was a kid when I started playing MMOs, and recapturing those exact first months in Ultima Online so long ago is pretty damn impossible. On the other hand, I’m constantly surprised at just how close I can get to replicating the feelings. I definitely did for Super Hero Squad Online; even at the time, I thought it resembled a toy more than the loot grinders MMOs were fast becoming. And every time I hang out with my kids inside Trove or Guild Wars 2 and watch them muck around, unconcerned with chat trolling and stats and guild drama? Yeah, it’s seeing the game with … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: Is it possible for an MMO to make you feel like a kid again?
One of the most frequent questions I’m ever asked here at Massively OP or on my own blog is, “How do you do it? How do you play all these games while handling a job and family?” Obviously the solution is experimental military-grade medication that’s kept me from sleeping since 2011. Another popular theory is that I’m one of a batch of clones that time-share my life. The truth is that I don’t have any more time than anyone else and have had to organize my life and game smartly. It’s not like back when I was a bachelor and could play games for three days straight; now I have a wife, four kids, and way too many things that are always vying for my attention. But I love to play MMOs, and along with writing, I see it as my hobby. So I’ve figured out little ways to make gaming work on a limited time budget, and if you’re in a similar situation and feel torn between wanting to play MMOs and feeling like you don’t have the time to … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: How to play MMOs on a limited time budget

Guild Wars 2 is getting in on a similar kind of fun now by partnering to promote bubble tea. I mean, at least bubble tea is good. “In celebration of the sixth anniversary of ArenaNet’s Guild Wars 2, one of the best-selling MMORPGs of all time, the developer is partnering with national bubble tea retailer, Kung Fu Tea, on a month-long in-store and online promotion during September. Throughout the month, customers will have the chance to try the Elder Dragon Dreamy Delight (a delicious Guild Wars twist on Kung Fu Tea’s Cocoa Cream Wow) as well as unlock Guild Wars 2 in-game content and claim amazing daily prizes via the Kung Fu Tea app.” Yes, there’s a branded bubble tea app, and if you link your social media accounts to it, you’ll get codes to download a cosmetic outfit for the Guild Wars 2, plus the … [Read more...] about ArenaNet partners with bubble tea vendor on a Guild Wars 2-themed drink, and there’s free stuff in it for you
Do you still hold any hope for The Repopulation? There seemed to be a decided dip in interest for this sci-fi sandbox following its change in ownership a while back, but that doesn’t mean that the project is DOA. The current owners have been posting a semi-monthly newsletter on the site to inform the community of upcoming developments, such as a patch that the team is finishing up for sometime this fall. The new owners have been trying to figure out what key issues they inherited with this MMO: “The Repopulation has pushed the edges of what HeroEngine was designed to accommodate. That is not to say what in The Repopulation was done is ‘wrong.’ Rather, in addition to a much older version of HeroEngine, they pushed the envelope significantly further than we ever anticipated from a performance, storage and content perspective.” The future update will contain weather changes, tweaks to the Plymouth Control Center to make it run smoothly for players, fixes for … [Read more...] about The Repopulation untangles its core issues and works on a new patch
