There’s a lot going on in EVE Online right now, from the insane storyline playing out right now in-game and new Triglavian ships on the horizon to long-awaited changes about to drop that will make wars and PvP in high-security space much fairer. The April release is scheduled to drop in two days on April 9th with changes to remote assistance and a series of balance changes to capital and sub-capital ships that may help curb supercapital dominance in nullsec, and there’s much more to come. The Triglavian storyline I discussed in a recent column has continued at pace, with players intercepting messages from the Triglavian Collective discussing our incursions into the abyss and their search for the Drifter hive systems. More players have encountered the Triglavian shipyard site, and as the ship is being slowly completed they’ve made the startling discovery that it’s actually a lot bigger than we previously thought. In this edition of EVE Evolved, I break down all … [Read more...] about EVE Evolved: Big things are happening in EVE Online this spring

In addition, from April 1-10, players will enjoy a Fame boost to help unlock new gear and raise specs. Will there be changes to Albion Online’s business model? Albion Online’s business model has always been based on two pillars: Premium status, which can be bought with either real money or ingame currency, and a vanity-only ingame shop. This business model will not change when the game goes free-to-play. The only difference is that you will no longer need to purchase the game in order to play. Head over to … [Read more...] about Albion Online Going Free to Play on April 10th

When Pearl Abyss bought out CCP Games last week, the overwhelming message to EVE Online players was that it would be business as usual for the foreseeable future. Many players were initially worried that Pearl Abyss would try to squeeze as much money as possible out of the EVE playerbase, but it seems likely that Pearl Abyss isn’t too interested in interfering with the game. Pearl Abyss CEO Robin Jung confirmed that “CCP Games will operate as an independent studio” and CCP Games confirmed in a recent Q&A that “CCP maintains control of how we develop EVE.” Not all changes to EVE Online‘s monetisation model would be negative, though, and there are definitely opportunities to make more money from players without negatively impacting the game or its community. EVE has been chronically under-merchandised throughout its lifetime, for example, with some nice premium collectable books but a poor online store and no ship models or posters … [Read more...] about EVE Evolved: Two ways that EVE Online’s monetisation could be expanded under Pearl Abyss
Play EVE Online for freeJust a few days ago, we awoke to news so unexpected that it made me check I hadn’t time-traveled to April 1st: EVE Online developer CCP Games is being bought by Black Desert Online studio Pearl Abyss for a total of $425 million USD. The news immediately kicked the EVE Online community into a frenzy, with most people’s gut reactions being overwhelmingly negative. Black Desert is known for its aggressive monetisation strategies and many EVE Online players were understandably worried that Pearl Abyss would try to force the same strategy onto EVE. CCP Games and Pearl Abyss have obviously been very positive about the buyout, with both companies issuing statements about the exciting new opportunities they see in working together. CCP has also been pretty quick to get a handle on the community discussion surrounding the deal, answering some questions on twitter and holding a Q&A thread on the EVE forum Friday nightt. The player-elected Council … [Read more...] about EVE Evolved: What could the sale of CCP Games mean for EVE Online?
