Longtime MOP readers know that many our writers have a fondness for old MMORPGs, either because that’s how we got into the hobby and then this career path or because we still love and play them today. Some of us even play, ahem, some of the dead ones. And yet come awards season, classic MMOs are rarely up for any awards, and if they are – like, say, Ultima Online, which launched F2P this year – they don’t win. And that’s a shame. Sure, some of them have graphics that have fallen by the wayside, but most have mechanics that can stand toe to toe with anything made in the last few years – and some could beat them given a chance. Thanks to commenter Agemyth, who suggested this topic a few years back, we’re going to put it to a vote once again, offering up a wide range of “gracefully aging” MMOs that could reasonably be considered classics based on the era of their launch. No, we didn’t include blockbusters like World of … [Read more...] about Leaderboard: What’s the best classic MMORPG still running at the end of 2018?
NCsoft held a media conference “Only One” yesterday to celebrate the 20th anniversary of its classic PC MMORPG, Lineage, which is still the Korean game giant’s top revenue product today. Titled Lineage Remastered, the upcoming massive changes prompted NCsoft CEO Kim Taek-Jin to acknowledge that even he do not know how the community will respond. Listed below are the changes for Lineage Remastered, currently scheduled for next month. • New resolution – Lineage Remastered will introduce the 1920 x 1080 (16:9) HD resolution along with revamped UI. NCsoft claims that higher resolution such as 4K will make the UI and characters too small on the screen, hence 1080P was the best option. • Better frame rate – Along with the new higher resolution, NCsoft claims that the frame rate will be 2 times better than before. • Updated graphics – 3D models for characters and monsters will all be updated with a better resolution. This is not an option, … [Read more...] about – Classic MMORPG celebrates 20th anniversary with Remastered update
Developed by Runewaker Entertainment, Runes of Magic is a classical, free-to-play MMORPG which could be accused of being a World of Warcraft clone. There are, however, a number of very interesting features which make it a viable alternative to Blizzard’s masterpiece whilst maintaining some originality. Your first steps of a player’s journey is to create a character and assign a race and class. Runes of Magic contains three races (Human, Dwarf and Elf) and has eight classes, each of which are suited to varying styles of game play. The Brunt of the Journey Like any good MMORPG, in order to gain XP and acquire new skills you must complete quests, which are given to players by NPC’s who are marked on the mini-map by a yellow exclamation mark. Quests are fairly standard fare and usually involve traveling to a location, collecting or killing a certain number of objects or hostile NPC’s before … [Read more...] about Runes of Magic Review 2018 – Is This Classic MMORPG Worth Playing?
Classic MMORPG DOFUS Introduces Another Fresh Start Progression Server Baptized “Temporis”, two single-account servers are offering players of the DOFUS MMO a universe that’s been reset. As the name suggests, these servers will open for a limited period of time, in part to preserve the notion of freshness and renewal, and in part to provide a competitive framework for die-hard rankings fans. First resources, first dungeons, first bosses! The players will be able to re-experience what it felt like those “first times”, and re-live them fully thanks to a revamped gameplay that favors immersion: more dynamic game mechanics, and simplified quests and professions. Rewards are up for grabs, and adventurers will earn them all the more easily if they unite in guilds and alliances. And to boost players even more, a leaderboard with several themes will be updated live. The Temporis … [Read more...] about Classic MMORPG DOFUS Introduces Another Fresh Start Progression Server
[Game website] MapleStory 2 has not been doing very well in South Korea and even China, and there were concerns that plans for a Western launch might be cancelled. However, new content has always been regularly added in the Asian servers over the years, and recently the English website for MapleStory 2 was revealed by Nexon America, signalling the game’s launch later this year. Will the picky Western audience react more positively to this sequel? Yes, there is IP block implemented. If you are from Asia, your country might most probably be blocked from accessing this English version under Nexon America, especially Southeast Asia. A little bird has told us many months ago that Garena’s publishing rights for MapleStory 2 SEA has not expired, and there is no news if the company plans on launching the game. Once again, this is just a rumor, so please take it with a pinch of salt. As mentioned in my various MapleStory 2 articles from before, MapleStory 2 is no longer a 2D … [Read more...] about – Nexon America opens website for sequel to classic MMORPG
