Pioneering first-person shooter MMOs With online gaming technology in its relative infancy and high latency a limitation for the development of many MMOs, it was amazing that PlanetSide not only pulled off a fast-paced, real-time combat game on the scale it did, but that it also made it work well back in 2003. While World War II Online had FPS action like this in 2001, bugs and slow gameplay kept it from being as good — or as popular — as PlanetSide. … [Read more...] about The Game Archaeologist: Classic PlanetSide

Happily, this has not been the case. After all this time, I can say with honesty that these two consoles probably get more play by me and my household than anything else. Yet Blizzard’s certainly been upping the polygon count and other graphical tricks over the years, and jumping back in time to see the sharp edges of everything, the old character models, and the less expressive world was rather jarring. I can still lose myself in it, yes, but it makes me so grateful that we have a better-looking title now in 2019 than we did back in 2004. … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: Ten weird things I’m relearning with WoW Classic
