May 2018 was good to Fortnite, again, SuperData’s latest global revenue report shows, but its growth rate may be coming to a middle. “Fortnite hits a new high but growth is slowing down,” the research firm says in today’s report. “We estimate that Fortnite made $318 million across all platforms in May, up 7% from April. The majority of growth came from console, with mobile and PC both coming in flat compared to April.” On the PC side, Dota 2 came out of nowhere to return to the list at #6, bumping World of Warcraft down a tick and Hearthstone off completely. League of Legends continues to rule the roost. On the console side, Fortnite is still at the top; both Overwatch and Destiny 2 have returned to the top 10 as games like Far Cry 5 and Battlefield have fallen off. And on mobile, Pokemon Go has resurged, as it always does in summer in the northern hemisphere, as it’s gathered up more players than ever. Fun side note: Remember Netease’s … [Read more...] about SuperData’s May 2018 revenue report shows Fortnite slowing down, Pokemon Go picking up for summer

On May 10, 2018 Nexon released their Q1 2018 earnings report. A more digestible Investor Presentation slide deck was also released and is filled with interesting charts and figures. The headline figures show that Nexon had a great quarter: revenues were up 21% year over year, due significantly to the stronger than expected results of Dungeon Fighter Online in China. Net income did even better, doubling from last year to a total of 46.6 billion yen (~$426 mil USD). As usual, Nexon's primary markets were China and Korea which accounted for 67% and 22% of total revenue respectively. More interestingly, Japan now accounts for a smaller share of total revenue at 3% than North America at 4% or Europe & Others (also 4%). As far as Nexon's Western lineup is concerned, mobile gaming revenues now make up a significant majority thanks to the acquisition of Pixelberry Studios. Pixelberry Studios is best known for 'Choices: Stories You Play' which is available on the App Store and on Google … [Read more...] about Nexon Releases First Quarter 2018 Earnings Report, DFO & MapleStory Still Top Earners
South Korean gaming giant NCSoft reported their Q1 2018 earnings today with total revenue coming in at 475,159M KRW ($444M USD), down 11% quarter over quarter and up 98% year over year. As with their previous earnings reports, take a look at sales by game: Despite a slight dip from last quarter, mobile games continued to dominate, bringing in over half of the company's total revenues. Every other game saw a slight dip as well with the exception of Aion which saw a big jump which NCSoft attributed to a "change in monetization scheme" (sounds like they upped the p2w). In their investor call with analysts, NCSoft acknowledged that Blade and Soul 2 for mobile was delayed into 2019 after failing to meet expectations. The entire game will be getting redesigned and will be developed by an entirely new team (basically same deal as Lineage Eternal). Project TL on the other hand seems to be on track for a release sometime next year. South Korea remains the #1 region for NCSoft with over 70% of … [Read more...] about NCSoft Reports Q1 2018 Earnings, Aion Revenue Up, GW2 and B&S Down
Reporting on Activision-Blizzard’s endless piles of money is about as much fun as reporting on how fifty-bajillion-zillion people are playing fork knife. No, I said that wrong; it’s about as much fun as taking a fork and a knife to my own eyeballs. But hey, it’s tradition, so here goes: Bobby Kotick and the gang have announced new records, measured in said piles of money; the company acknowledges it was a quarter “without large content releases” that nevertheless produced enough piles of money to surpass its own guidance, leading it to raise its outlook for more piles of money for the year. “For the quarter ended March 31, 2018, Activision Blizzard’s net revenues presented in accordance with GAAP were a Q1 record $1.97 billion, as compared with $1.73 billion for the first quarter of 2017. GAAP net revenues from digital channels were an all-time quarterly record $1.46 billion. GAAP operating margin was 30%. GAAP earnings per share were an … [Read more...] about ActiBlizz Q1 2018 financial report: WoW is actually outperforming expectations – time for a fourth yacht or no?
SuperData has published their monthly Worldwide Digital Games Market Report for March 2018 and it has a few surprises. League of Legends, which has graced the #1 PC spot since the inception of these reports, has finally been dethroned. The venerable MOBA has fallen to #2, usurped by Dungeon Fighter Online. While this does not necessarily indicate a decline in League's numbers (DFO recently held massively successful events), it does at least point to stagnation. We'll have to wait another month to see whether this was an aberration or the start of trend. The other major move in the PC category this month was the continued rise of Fortnite which is now at the #5 position, below Crossfire. Fortnite only launched in China on April 23, so its likely we'll see it continue to shoot up in the months ahead. Fortnite performed even more impressively in the Console category where it took the #1 spot. That console spot will be highly contested in April with games like God of War and Far Cry 5 … [Read more...] about SuperData March 2018 Report Shows League of Legends Dethroned, Fortnite Still Booming
