Like everyone else working in or around the gaming industry, I read Kotaku’s Jason Schreier’s exposé on BioWare’s development of Anthem. And like many of you, I read it having a hard time believing just how terrible things were, even as someone who covers a major BioWare online title, SWTOR, regularly in this very column. There were issues with Anthem, from production and marketing to actual launch, but I had trouble wrapping my head around some of the things said. Then after some tweets by the likes of Trion’s Scott Hartsman and the follow-ups by Jason Schreier himself, I began to wonder if this isn’t just a symptom of something greater in gaming development. Before I jump into the meat of this, I want to give my thanks to Schreier for putting the original piece together. I understand the time and work that he put into his piece. Although I might criticize parts of the article, I don’t believe that it is bad or false or any other negative … [Read more...] about Hyperspace Beacon: I wasn’t going to talk about Anthem, but I think I should

One of the rumors floating around Reddit and YouTube is the claim that stores across the globe, from the UK to Australia to even Poland, are pulling and marking down their inventory of Fallout 76 boxes and not resupplying. Whether or not you buy the rumor, the implication is tantalizing: Some folks truly believe that Bethsoft is prepping a business model flip for the game in conjunction with the release of those unconfirmed datamined lockboxes. It’s not even an idea without precedent; ZeniMax certainly had quite a bit more success with The Elder Scrolls Online once it adopted a more hybrid buy-to-play business model. But it could also be something else, like a box revamp, bad sales, or distribution problems. Do you think Bethsoft is going to take Fallout 76 free-to-play? And… do you care? 0 I had a friend ask me what I thought about the MMO industry going back to the old school style of games. Then I saw this question from the Pantheon twitter account. What do you think about the industry’s recent shift back to older school games and vanilla re-launches/servers? MMO industry going back to old school style of games? Industry shifting back to old school games and re-launches? I’m not living in the same world, I guess. The MMO industry has not shifted anywhere. In fact, the MMO “industry” is quickly losing its “industry” status altogether. The MMO genre has been dead for several years now, with a handful of strong titles still living on to keep that flame from going out. Some of those stalwarts have released vanilla servers, but that’s not new. EverQuest has released plenty of throwback servers over the years. Some of the nearly-dead or dying games throw back to the old days for cash grabs like LotRO and Rift. Some companies … [Read more...] about There’s No Shift Back to Old School MMORPGs

New prison rule #1: No one is to use “shiv” as a verb any more. Last month there was a big debate over whether or not someone was shivved or just stabbed and we want to avoid that in the future. New prison rule #2: Just because you’re in jail doesn’t mean that you can’t display a standard of culture, so we are instituting a new mandatory ballroom dancing class for all prisoners running for two hours. We’ll have a rotating schedule for that. New prison rule #3: Please consult with the guards before enacting your escape plan. We’re not going to stop you, we just want to be able to time dramatically running down the hall at the last moment so that everyone is very excited. New prison rule #4: The ballroom dancing class has been cancelled. Yeah, we realized that was never a good idea. Finishing school visiting hours are still on. New prison rule #5: Let the guards know What Are You Playing and whether or not they will need to break up any arguments … [Read more...] about WRUP: Moving forward, there are going to be some changes around this prison edition
