New Dawn – not to be confused with Darkfall New Dawn or Osiris New Dawn or Star Trek Online’s New Dawn – is hitting Steam’s early access this week after a lengthy period in closed alpha. We began watching the game two years ago, when we described it as a “survival sandbox that puts players in the role of South American natives in the 1800s who must fend off pirates while living off the land,” complete with “interesting mechanics, such as taming horses, being killed in your sleep while you’re offline, and a slavery system with the NPCs.” It ran an unsuccessful Kickstarter in 2017, which raised only 4.4% of its $82K goal before it was canceled by Italian developer e-visualsoft. “At the moment, New Dawn is in Pre-Beta stage, many game mechanics are complete and we have a solid base in programming, which allows us to add new content quickly,” the devs told followers this weekend. “The game is stable and performs quite … [Read more...] about New Dawn, a survival sandbox set in the 1800s, has launched into Steam early access
Early access games
New Dawn is now on Steam Early Access after two years in development. The game is currently in its “pre-beta stage” with many game mechanics considered to be complete and that there is “a solid base in programming” that allows new content to be added quickly. The latest stable client is a work in progress and “many core mechanics and features are present and polished” but that players need to remember that “a Steam Early Access game is not completely finished, polished or fully optimized”. New Dawn is a survival sandbox open-world multiplayer game set on an island during the golden age of piracy Vicious pirates land on an unknown South American island, wreaking havoc everywhere. These seamen are brutal and pitiless. Fighting them off will be no easy feat! A new dawn will rise for the island inhabitants. The peaceful life they have led until now will be no more. My initial impressions of Conan Exiles, written just about a year ago, weren’t exactly glowing. While I know not every game I play needs to appeal to me, so much of the genre just felt like a repetition of what we’d already seen countless times before: a survival game in early access filled with bugs, naked people killing each other, and nothing that really made living in the game world feel worth it. Character progression felt bland, building was significantly harder than destruction, and the guild recruitment button on day one resulted in axing people in the face. But that was a year ago. MJ has covered in-depth what the game’s done right since then, but even I’ve noticed just how much Funcom’s done to bolster the title. It made buildings more difficult to destroy. More emotes came in. More PvE content. Climbing. New zones. And then the launch announcement about a year after EA, with February’s honest look at the game’s future. … [Read more...] about GDC 2018: Funcom’s Tor Egil Andersen on Conan Exiles’ early access, launch, and beyond
Fortnite, one of several new paid early access games that opens up this year, looks to offer an interesting take on survival and fort building games. I spent around a week or so playing around the PC version of the game (it is also available for PS4, Xbox Live and Mac). Here’s a short rundown of what I’ve experienced during the Early Access. Gameplay Fortnite mixes gameplay elements from survival games, where you can gather resources on instanced maps, while throwing you in Borderlands-like shoot outs against the husk. Half of your time is spent on gathering resources that you need to create everything you’re going to be using: from traps, to weapons, to ammo, and most especially to your fort’s building materials. The other half of your gaming experience in Fortnite focuses mostly on trying to defend against the husks as you stand your ground in a variety of missions. Defending Against The Husks The game’s core gameplay is pretty straightforward. But the … [Read more...] about Fortnite Early Access Impressions (PC)
If it sucks then it’s just alpha but if it’s final then it’s another bad game. I know.. what do you expect from an early access game? Well shiver my timbers and call me matey but some early access games are quite impressive and show a lot of potential. This evening I sat down and played Wild Terra , an upcoming MMO life simulator and by that I mean it’s an open world MMO where you are responsible for your survival , even if you are slightly impaired. Does the alpha suck? No , is it great? Hardly. It’s in between that fine line of good or bad and I’m undecided. Let’s work out the pros and cons; PROS You run around as a semi naked female (because females always get more loot in online games). You build things (yay!). You can destroy other people’s things they built (double yay!). CONS Getting started can be confusing (how do I build a house?!) The directional system is temperamental, especially when attempting to slaughter an … [Read more...] about When is early access too early?
