Free trials have finally come to Final Fantasy XIV, which means more people running around the world of Eorzea. One question that always pops up is how to deal with the army of dead characters that will be created and then never returned to. Square Enix has apparently thought of this problem and come up with a solution. Accounts must be upgraded to the full version within 90 days, or else it appears that the character may be lost. In order to keep playing with the same in-game and character data in the full version, players must upgrade to the full version of the game within 90 days after the Free Trial expires. There are similar setbacks which appear to be aimed at slowing down gil farmers. Free accounts cannot trade, nor can they use the market board, retainers, free companies, moogle delivery service, nor can they use /tell, /yell, and /shout chat commands, and are restricted from creating parties or linkshells. Additionally, it looks like accounts are tied to … [Read more...] about FFXIV: Trial Characters Eventually Expire
Last summer, FFXIV announced a promotion where you could get a free Falcon mount as long as you were subscribed for 90 days within the promotional period of time. When I saw this, I was like… “Pffft. No problem. I’ve been subbed to FFXIV since 2013! I don’t see that changing.” And that’s true. I have been subbed nonstop since Sept 2013 (dang!), and for a good chunk of that time, I’d done it monthly. At first, it made sense to sub monthly since this was the first MMO with a sub I’d played in a long time. You never know when you want to pull the plug and leave a game. But as the years rolled by, it got a little silly that I didn’t sub for a longer chunk of time, since that would save a little bit of money to do it that way. So, the whole Falcon mount promotion prompted me to finally upgrade my sub to pay for 3 months at a time. Surely, that mount was a shoe-in for me. And while I’m not over-nuts about gathering mounts, I like … [Read more...] about FFXIV: Finding the Falcon (And Some Goodwill)
Though I didn’t spend a whole lot of time in FFXIV this weekend, I did finish up a lot of small odds and ends. Every week, I’ve participated in the Fashion Report glamour contest in the Gold Saucer. Only one week have I not had what I needed to at least score a 70-80 or above. As you participate in the mini-game, new items unlock in the boutique. This weekend, I unlocked both the Spring Bottoms and Spring Shoes. Pictured above is the entire set, undyed. It’s a pretty cute little outfit, and I glamoured it over my healer set for now. This second outfit isn’t glamour, but rather me obtaining the first set of level 70 script gear for my Weaver. Everything except for the gloves and hat are augmented, so I’m pretty close to having a full BIS on the left side. I tell you what, it makes crafting go a whole lot smoother with much better gear! Next, I hope to work on crafting better shared-job gear for the rest of my crafters. I just don’t have the room … [Read more...] about FFXIV: Spring Set, Weaver Upgrade, BLM 70!
“Glamour is end game,” is a common joke among FFXIV players. So, while we got a new Glamour Dresser (Commode) this patch, we also got a new mini-game at the Gold Saucer called Fashion Report! So once you’ve unlocked the new mini-game through a very short quest in the Gold Saucer, you can talk to Masked Rose to see what this week’s fashion requirements are (you can also view this from your Timers menu). You get a little blank mannequin that shows you the overall theme, which items you’re being judged on, and a hint as to what the correct items are to place in those slots. That’s it. That’s all you have to go on. Now, a few hints we’ve discovered: You must have a piece of gear in all slots, even the ones that don’t have hints. If you don’t, your score will be significantly lower. It doesn’t matter what’s in those slots, just that there’s something there. Different pieces of glamour have different ratings … [Read more...] about FFXIV: Fashion Report Mini-Game
giving Final Fantasy XIV a try, with the Japanese MMO getting three months to win me over. Surprisingly, it’s managed to hold my attention in a magitek grip ever since I created a new character earlier this month. If my Twitter feed is anything to go by, I’m having a whale of a time. However, if I’m honest, this isn’t my first time in FFXIV. Back in the original beta, rolled a new character and ventured forth, quickly stumbling on a quest to kill ten rats. Only the rats only had three spawn points, and the spawn timer was so low that a growing crowd of players swamped them. I logged out and never looked back, passing on the game until now. That was almost ten years ago. Time passes and games change, but few have gone through as much upheaval as FFXIV. I interviewed producer/director Yoshida-san back when he was preparing to relaunch the game with the subtitle A Realm Reborn, and I couldn’t help but appreciate the energy and faithful commitment he brought … [Read more...] about FFXIV: Making Good on a Promise
