Bonus question: What sort of pet would you love to have regardless of space or care requirements? Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Another Pokemon Go and Let’s Go weekend, but I think it’s paying off. It’s not just motivating me to walk but to work out in general, and I’m able to wear more of my old clothes again! While I’d love to have a pet bear, temperament is also a bit of an issue so I’m going with a capybara. They’re cute, semi active, semi aquatic, and curious. Oh, and big enough to take on a walk! First look the sims 4
The one down side to working ahead is that sometimes your schedule gets nudged around more than expected. I promise that a further look at the changed and underused zones in World of Warcraft is on its way (and written, even), but it keeps getting delayed, first because of book reviews and then hold on, what the heck is this? This is the equivalent of doing an experiment in a lab to discover that gravity accelerates a falling body at a rate of 4.9 meters per second squared. Something is very, very wrong here. Of course, if you actually got that result, you wouldn’t immediately publish a paper detailing that gravity no longer worked the way we all knew it did. So let’s examine two possible reactions to the rather surprising lack of WoW on the Superdata chart, because there’s more to seeing a surprising result than just nodding and accepting that it must be the new normal. Something has gone awry So rather than assuming that WoW suddenly not showing up on … [Read more...] about WoW Factor: The great Superdata fall-off
There are always going to be differences in opinion about what should be done with an IP based upon a franchise. That’s just natural. The same core universe could be used to make a sprawling sandbox with weak combat but a robust non-combat market and profession system, or it could be used to make a combat-focused experience that focuses on energetic fights, nifty story moments, and little else. In both cases, even if you don’t like the end result, you can understand exactly why the IP was used for this. Our column today is not about those games. No, this is about games that completely failed to make use of their licenses to IPs, produced totles that did not in any way logically follow from the license that was given, or otherwise took pure gold and turned it into something… less than gold. There’s room to debate whether some of these IPs would ever make good MMOs, but boy, the uses we have were pretty bad. 1. Battlestar Galactica I still have not yet actually … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: The worst-squandered IPs in online gaming
When my computer’s hard drive barfed back in May and I had to reload everything onto a new one, I had forgotten at the time to reinstall The Sims 4. It wasn’t until the recent Seasons expansion patch that I even remembered that I had it, at which moment I went, “Oh YEAH, that would totally hit the spot!” and I returned to the evil lair that is EA Origin to get it. It actually does hit the spot, especially for those evenings when I want a very casual house-building experience. Hey, MMOs, I’d be building houses in you if more of you would just have them, you know. The other interesting thing about The Sims 4 in our household is that it’s kind of a party experience. When I boot it up, all of the kids rush over and start telling me what characters to make and how to decorate and a thousand other backseat commands. We have one household that was built by committee and it is the goofiest thing ever. So when I installed it, I figured that I might for the … [Read more...] about The Sims 4: All of this costs HOW much?
Yes, that’s a photo of the inside of my PC. 🙂 Anyhow, I enthusiastically took a 3 day weekend for the launch of Sims 4 Seasons, and just to have a little time off. I’d planned on coming back to this week with lots of Sim stories to share. That’s almost what happened until yesterday. On Sunday, I was trying to slide in a little quick Ninja leveling in FFXIV. While running a Leveling dungeon with Syn, I noticed that I was having crippling lag spikes. Anyone who plays Ninja knows that lag is that job’s worst enemy. At first, I just thought it was the game or connection. But this wasn’t the normal kind of lag spike. It felt like when you’d left a Steam game to download in the background, or something else running that was working your PC heavily. It was this kind of stuttering lag that I felt was coming from me and not my connection. When we finished the run, Syn asked, “What’s the temps on your PC?” I hadn’t been … [Read more...] about When the Night’s on Fire
