H1Z1 is no more. No, it hasn’t shut down. It’s now officially known as Z1 Battle Royale on PC, despite being unofficially labeled as such since last September, following Wednesday’s mega-patch, Return of the King, which General Manager Anthony Castoro described as representing “the first big delivery on the promise that the new NantG team made when it took over development last September: Bring back the game that so many of you fell in love with in the classic ‘King of the Kill’ era around Preseason 3 at the end of 2016 and in early 2017.” Last week, Castoro also characterized the patch as “pivotal in reuniting Just Survive with Z1 Battle Royale,” hinting at a possible return of H1Z1’s original survival mode. I think it’s even more important than that; this patch, and its level of success, will be pivotal in keeping the primary battle royale game mode alive. Let’s take a look at the numbers. Prior to the patch, … [Read more...] about Wednesday’s Z1 Battle Royale Update And Rebranding Might Be The Game’s Last Chance

Fortnite's PUBG is going F2P on September 26. Their original plan was to make the entire Fortnite game F2P after selling early-access founders packs. And yes, in case you're confused, they also sold physical copies of the game as well. How that makes sense for a game going F2P is really beyond me, but that's our industry today. Epic Games is pivoting pretty fast. They're moving away from the base game (which sucks) toward the PUBG-Like Battle Royale game which actually has a lot more potential. It's smart. According to the official release, squad mode is also coming 9/26. That's pretty cool. Some of my early feedback of the "test" version is: The maps needs more development because it feels sparse and empty (though I get it's meant to be built up in a way) Vehicles would be fun (and are being conceptualized by the dev team) I want the map bigger if there will be vehicles and if parachuting remains the same where you travel further horizontally More maps and variety would be nice too … [Read more...] about Fortnite PUBG-Like Battle Royale is F2P September 26
Last week, following Epic’s announcement that PvE-centric Fortnite would be getting a PvP-centric battle royal mode its paying PvE players apparently didn’t want (but that’s OK because it’s free?), we all rolled our eyes at the transparent attempt to capitalize on the runaway success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Developer Bluehole, however, did more than that: In a press release, it all but accused Epic of ripping off the mode and suggested it’d be contemplating some sort of action against the company, causing a market run on virtual popcorn as everyone watched two massive video game companies prepare for a possible legal war over what seemed to many gamers to be a pretty old game trope. But in a new PC Gamer interview, Bluehole has since clarified its position: It’s not about the games’ shared ideas but about Epic specifically. “This is not about the battle royale game mode itself,” VP/EP Changhan Kim told PC Gamer. … [Read more...] about PUBG dev argues Fortnite spat is about Epic and Unreal Engine’s conflicts, not about owning the battle royal genre
So, how are battle royale fans different from any other sort of competitive gamer? A recent study put out by market intelligence firm Newzoo finds that they’re more dedicated. In basically every metric, too. Battle royale fans tend to be more likely to spend money over other competitive gamers (88 percent vs. 75 percent), more likely to invest over six hours of time in games a week (30 percent vs. 25 percent on console, 40 percent vs. 32 percent on PC), and more likely to watch several e-sports events per month (28 percent vs. 19 percent). It also confirms once again that Fortnite is eating PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds players, but you already knew that. Of course, this particular report uses the somewhat fuzzy metric of “competitive gamers,” which could mean a lot of different things. Still, it means that there’s definitely engagement and dedication on that side of the fence, something that does tend to justify the amount of money being poured into the … [Read more...] about Data show that battle royale gamers tend to spend more money on games
The Battle Royale genre turned from a niche game mod to industry leader in just one year. Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, developed by Bluehole, blazed that trail and hit a peak of 3.2 million concurrent players earlier this year. But what turned Battle Royale into a genre rather than a single hit was how quickly Epic Games was able to spin out their own version: Fortnite Battle Royale. Despite being second out the gate, Fortnite has managed to surpass PUBG by hitting 3.4 million concurrent users earlier this month. Despite being free to play, Fortnite has rakes in over $80 million USD per month according to Superdata Research. That places both PUBG and Fortnite on the list of top 10 highest grossing PC games. The only genre that has more entries in the top 10 is the MMORPG itself. Other studios were quick to realize to potential in this new genre. Games like Paladins and Warframe quickly announced their own Battle Royale modes. These and other Battle Royale games like Darwin Project … [Read more...] about The Weekly Raid: Are Battle Royale Games A Fad?
