Federation News Service, killing for a story. My experience with Star Trek Online this weekend exemplified what I like so much the game. Late Saturday night, I found myself drowsing at my keyboard but not quite ready to go to bed. With the Series 2: The Devidians rerun in full swing, I decided to hop online and do an episode before I crash. I found my Federation News Service fleeties already finishing up the series, but as luck would have it they had to go back to the first episode, and so I happily jumped on board. What I like most about STO is the fast, straight-forward and self-contained nature of the missions. When I run them with friends, I get all the social benefits associated with running an instance without the hassles like roles or worrying if encounters will last for hours and hours. I plugged away at the rest of the Devidian series the next day and relived the creepiness of the later episodes, taking a page from Scopique and playing it in the dark with my headphones … [Read more...] about Star Trek Online: Bonnie Kiiiin Bonnie Kiiiiin, I SEE YOU

STO: Uncovering What Lies Beneath
(Note: Mild spoilers) Tell me this doesn't look like a bad situation... Well, let me just start off by saying the latest Star Trek Online Feature Episode “What Lies Beneath” was holiday-appropriate. Do they even celebrate Halloween in Star Trek? I can’t recall, but in any case, the new episode was undoubtedly meant to be a Halloween treat for the players. That said, this week’s episode had very little in it to advance the story arc, at least not until the very end. What Cryptic has done instead is turn the underbowels of Drozona station into a funhouse of terror, with a mission designed to lead you into all the horror genre references and fright traps that they have cleverly placed around the instance. I thought I was ready for all the tricks, though a couple of them still managed to get me to leap right out of my bodysuit. If you’ve played through this episode, you’ll know what I mean when I say they used a perfect voice actor. Not sure if this is … [Read more...] about STO: Uncovering What Lies Beneath

MMO Week in Review: Trion’s tribulations
It’s the end of an era for MMO players this week, as Gamigo bought Trion Worlds. Technically, it appears it bought Trion’s assets, specifically the MMORPGs, as a reported 175+ employees were laid off with only 25 left behind to… well, it’s hard to see how 25 people could do much more than serve as a transition team for six MMORPGs, and it’s still not entirely clear what will be happening to all of those games long-term, particularly ArcheAge. But truly, this week had so many big stories and features that only something as big as Trion’s sunset could push them from the lede: We saw the announcement of progression servers for LOTRO, the launch of the troubled Red Dead Redemption 2, the return of Hellgate London, the rollout of Aion’s NGE, the formal launch of Bless Online, beta for Fallout 76, and a major win for the preservation of dead MMORPGs. And Halloween is this week! Read on to catch up with the very best of this week’s MMO news … [Read more...] about MMO Week in Review: Trion’s tribulations
