Finally, I was able to put aside several hours tonight to focus on Knights of the Old Republic II: The Sith Lords. I can’t promise this post won’t contain any spoilers, so heed this warning if you have any concerns about that at all. Respect the T3 unit! I’m not very far into the game yet, but already I can tell that much of what I’ve heard about the darker tone of KOTOR II is true. First of all, the Peragus Mining Facility isn’t exactly the happiest place in the galaxy, and the dead bodies lying all over the place certainly don’t help. The companions I’ve met so far, while interesting and thus far benign, nonetheless still give me the creeps. Even the amicable Atton Rand seems like someone I should be watching out for (I can’t help it, after the emotional roller coaster that was Carth Onasi from the first KOTOR, I’m suspicious of all and any pilots who say they just want to “help”). And Kreia…well, do I really … [Read more...] about KOTOR II – Taking Off

Look, folks, some MMOs have been sunsetted for so long, their emulators are celebrating big birthdays. Such is the case for Star Wars Galaxies Legends, one of the largest of the dozens currently in operation for the original game. SWGL just turned three years old and is in the middle of a celebratory event that’s bigger than what a lot of live games see. The player devs say that there are 89,000 characters on the server, and if every account had five characters, that’d come out to nearly 18,000 unique accounts – not too shabby at all for three years, especially for an NGE server! The festivities include a galaxy-spanning quest to murder bosses for cake, plus fireworks, multiple new collections, new paintings and gifts, and a double experience event running through Monday. … [Read more...] about Star Wars Galaxies Legends emulator celebrates third birthday with a quest for cake
Daybreak surprised the EverQuest II community last week by announcing it was resurrecting the sunsetted Nagafen server as a free-for-all PvP seasonal server that builds on ideas used on the Deathtoll server, with scoreboards, free trade, one character per account, and rebalanced stats. But it was meant to go live for subbers yesterday. Daybreak had to postpone the launch “The Nagafen PvP Beta server launch will be delayed until tomorrow due to an issue that is preventing players from properly patching the game. The team is hard at work getting things resolved, and aims to have things up and running as soon as possible! We apologize for the delay.” It seems the playerbase anxious for this server is a bit, uh, unruly; MOP commenter Denise tipped us off to a string of bannings in the EverQuest II official Discord, at least in the Nagafen channel. As I was scrolling back to verify that, I noticed the denizens arranging emoji to craft a homophobic slur for a Daybreak moderator, … [Read more...] about Daybreak delayed EverQuest II’s new free-for-all PvP server, Nagafen

The oncoming shutdown of WildStar isn’t the first time that I’ve heard some low-level snark slung against bloggers and players from various quarters to the effect of “You’re not playing it right now, so why are you mourning this? That’s some weird hypocrisy right there!” To me, that ignores a few factors, such as: You can’t always be playing all the MMOs all the time, even the ones you like If you’ve spent significant time with a game in the past and have a connection to it, that doesn’t fade to nothing when you’ve taken a break or left it. Plus, I’ve done my time, so that gives me the right to pine over its loss. Tell me you haven’t felt sad over the death of some musician or celeb that you haven’t spent time enjoying in the past year. When things are taken away that we loved in the past, that can hurt us in the now. You can love a game and not be playing it for understandable reasons, such as a broken … [Read more...] about Would I be playing Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heroes, Vanguard, and Warhammer Online if they were alive today?
