The oncoming shutdown of WildStar isn’t the first time that I’ve heard some low-level snark slung against bloggers and players from various quarters to the effect of “You’re not playing it right now, so why are you mourning this? That’s some weird hypocrisy right there!” To me, that ignores a few factors, such as: You can’t always be playing all the MMOs all the time, even the ones you like If you’ve spent significant time with a game in the past and have a connection to it, that doesn’t fade to nothing when you’ve taken a break or left it. Plus, I’ve done my time, so that gives me the right to pine over its loss. Tell me you haven’t felt sad over the death of some musician or celeb that you haven’t spent time enjoying in the past year. When things are taken away that we loved in the past, that can hurt us in the now. You can love a game and not be playing it for understandable reasons, such as a broken … [Read more...] about Would I be playing Star Wars Galaxies, City of Heroes, Vanguard, and Warhammer Online if they were alive today?

I haven’t been making any secret of how much fun I’m having in the Star Wars Galaxies Legends emulator (and thanks so much to the readers who urged me to try it!). What I haven’t tried just yet is TCGEmu, which is trying to revive the Star Wars Trading Card Game that existed only inside SWG itself. Late-game SWG players will recall that the TCG was ahead of its time on so many fronts: It was actually one of the first fully online card games out there, and yet because it was accessible only inside the MMO, it had no chance of reaching the heights of mainstream adoption that we’re used to seeing now with games like Hearthstone. It was gorgeous as heck, too, with stunning artwork that exists nowhere else. Of course, the TCG also has the dubious honor of being one of the first openly and egregiously lockbox-esque pay-to-win systems in a major MMORPG, as players spent gobs of money angling for loot cards, which they could then use (or sell) inside Star Wars Galaxies … [Read more...] about Star Wars Galaxies fans are working on an emulator for the game’s TCG
Play EVE Online for freeEVE Online’s mobile game now has an official title (sort of)! At ChinaJoy this month, CCP revealed the trailer for EVE Online: Infinite Galaxy, the mobile MMO that it is working on with NetEase. The trailer promises a space opera that spans across over 8,000 star systems. Players will have access to over 100 spaceships for this iOS and Android title. This announcement comes just days after EVE Online was shut down in China by its old publisher Tiancity. NetEase will be handling the rebooted version of that sandbox as well when it comes back online (and don’t feel too bad for those players, since they’ll be able to import their accounts to the reboot). EVE Online: Infinite Galaxy should be heading our way in 2019, but you can get excited about it now by watching the trailer below! Play EVE Online for freeEarlier this week, we covered CCP Games’ newly announced partnership with Chinese mega-publisher NetEase, which is taking over EVE Online in China and taking “New Eden’s Serenity server to the next level for Chinese capsuleers” beginning in October. Today, CCP and NetEase gave a press conference in Shanghai to clarify that it will be the beta test that begins in October (the game has been running its server there for a dozen years already). The last day for the previous operate will be September 30th. “NetEase Games is working with CCP and the original operator to conduct the seamless migration of players’ data,” CCP says. “NetEase Games will be leveraging its ten years plus of operational experience to crack down on botters and real money traders (RMT) to protect the interests of players, listen to the voices of players more closely, and create a better game environment for players in EVE Online China.” What … [Read more...] about CCP clarifies NetEase’s EVE Online China publishing, plans 2019 launch of EVE Project Galaxy mobile game
Unless you’re willing to venture out onto the wild space of emulated servers, you won’t be getting Star Wars Galaxies back. That doesn’t mean that you can’t reminisce about this MMO from a galaxy far, far away, thanks to the release of an unofficial fan history book called Galaxies: An Empire Remembered. The 172-page book recalls the history of Star Wars Galaxies from launch through its 2011 sunset and takes readers through the game’s planets, events, and ongoing legacy. More than 700 full-color images, including concept art, are included in this title. “This comprehensive guide gives those who played the game — and those who never got the chance — an opportunity to relive the nostalgia and excitement of this landmark entry into the MMORPG genre,” the description reads. SWG creator Raph Koster gave the book his endorsement on Twitter by saying, “The passion fans can have for something they loved never ceases to amaze and … [Read more...] about Star Wars Galaxies book takes fans back to this late, great MMO
