Nexon announced today that MapleStory 2 will officially be launching on October 10th with "pre-season" starting tomorrow on August 22 where players can create characters and reserve names. During pre-season users can also play a standalone version of Mushking Royale, the battle royale mode within MapleStory 2. The battle royale mode also includes some new changes including the introduction of squad mode (up to 4 players can team up) new items, and more. The launch version of the game on October 10th will also feature the new Runeblade class, 12 new dungeons, an increased level cap of 60 (from 50), and much more. I'm personally looking forward to playing this one again. I had a lot of fun during beta. While I'm not super excited for the standalone version of Mushking Royale, i'll probably play it a bit. So as you may know, I’m an MMORPG guy – not really a battle royale guy. There are some cool ideas for people who like the combat of survival games turned up to 11, but that’s not my thing. I like community building, crafting, negotiating, and generally using my words to avoid direct combat. So when Automaton games announced Mavericks and said it’d be adding MMO elements to the battle royale genre, I got a bit excited. However, after having some hands-on time with the game and talking to Automaton Games’ CEO James Thompson at this year’s GDC, I’ve come to the realization that it’s much more for the battle royale crowd than the MMO crowd, and this will be especially true at launch. The Mavericks way of life For those who don’t know, Thompson is also a co-founder and researcher at Playfusion, a kind of AR toy/card game company that makes things that seem cool to me. However, none of his work there is currently … [Read more...] about GDC 2018: Making sense of battle royale MMO Mavericks with Automaton Games
Back in Febrauary, we first wrote about a new and unique battle royale game from China, Swordsman X. I recently got to try Swordsman X in its Closed Beta 2 phase, and for the record, no kills were managed in my first 2 games, as seen in the footage below. I do admit I suck in PVP games, but the ancient wuxia setting in Swordsman X means I had to give it a try. Powered by Unreal Engine 4, developed by China-based Dream Game Studio and published by Cube Game, here is a quick look at wuxia battle royale Swordsman X. Other than the ancient wuxia setting, the main difference with the western battle royale games is the addition of a MMORPG-like skill system. Picking up weapons might be cool, but players have to find the corresponding weapon manuals to unlock skills. If not, the players can only use normal attacks. The lower level of these manual can usually be found beside the weapons, while higher tiers one (Level 3 and above) are usually scattered across the world. Due to latency issues, … [Read more...] about – Quick look at Closed Beta 2 of wuxia battle royale
The Battle Royale genre turned from a niche game mod to industry leader in just one year. Playerunknown's Battlegrounds, developed by Bluehole, blazed that trail and hit a peak of 3.2 million concurrent players earlier this year. But what turned Battle Royale into a genre rather than a single hit was how quickly Epic Games was able to spin out their own version: Fortnite Battle Royale. Despite being second out the gate, Fortnite has managed to surpass PUBG by hitting 3.4 million concurrent users earlier this month. Despite being free to play, Fortnite has rakes in over $80 million USD per month according to Superdata Research. That places both PUBG and Fortnite on the list of top 10 highest grossing PC games. The only genre that has more entries in the top 10 is the MMORPG itself. Other studios were quick to realize to potential in this new genre. Games like Paladins and Warframe quickly announced their own Battle Royale modes. These and other Battle Royale games like Darwin Project … [Read more...] about The Weekly Raid: Are Battle Royale Games A Fad?
