0 I had a friend ask me what I thought about the MMO industry going back to the old school style of games. Then I saw this question from the Pantheon twitter account. What do you think about the industry’s recent shift back to older school games and vanilla re-launches/servers? MMO industry going back to old school style of games? Industry shifting back to old school games and re-launches? I’m not living in the same world, I guess. The MMO industry has not shifted anywhere. In fact, the MMO “industry” is quickly losing its “industry” status altogether. The MMO genre has been dead for several years now, with a handful of strong titles still living on to keep that flame from going out. Some of those stalwarts have released vanilla servers, but that’s not new. EverQuest has released plenty of throwback servers over the years. Some of the nearly-dead or dying games throw back to the old days for cash grabs like LotRO and Rift. Some companies … [Read more...] about There’s No Shift Back to Old School MMORPGs
Going back to school
I started “Tropico 5” several times lately only to realize that something isn’t right with it. I miss Tropico 4 – and I can’t even say exactly what it is. I called Tropico 5 a waste of my money for quite some time. After playing it for more than 110 hours, I obviously cannot say that anymore! However, Tropico 4 is still standing with more than 130 hours. And I didn’t even play it anymore after Tropico 5 got released – until very recently, that is. It’s just a feeling, as I haven’t compared it directly yet, but in places, Tropico 5 seems like an easier version of Tropico 4. I remember being able to adjust the wage of my workers either for one building only, for all buildings of that type or for all workers with that school education – and in Tropico 5, there are only five choices for the wage – either for this specific building only or for all such types. It just annoys me that they took this away, even if it’s not … [Read more...] about Do you ever go back to earlier game versions?

Since my head is stuck in MMO news, gaming, and discussion for a part of my day, I have been known to conjure up hypotheticals to keep me amused. After all, the news is often so weird and unexpected that my daydreams might one day happen — you never know! One of those I’ve been pondering lately is what would happen, exactly, if a studio brought back online a rather popular long-deceased MMORPG. Say, City of Heroes or Star Wars Galaxies. Just out of the blue, “Hey guys, we’ll be reactivating the game next week, officially. See you then!” While those two titles are almost certainly forever lost to us, it’s not the craziest of questions. We have seen dead MMOs revived (such as Asheron’s Call 2 coming back for a short run, or Shadowbane in other territories, or Hellgate: London). It all depends on whether the code is still out there, the servers capable, and the studio willing. Plus IP issues and all that. Anyway, it’s feasible, it’s … [Read more...] about If we could bring MMOs back to life, what would it be like?
Selecting the name of your domain is as important as naming your newborn baby, as for the lifetime of your business it will be known by that name. There are many rules of thumb which you can follow to find a domain name which matches your business perfectly. Back in the day, it was hard to secure the desired domain name as most of the popular and common words on .com, .org and other top level domain names were taken. At the time of the writing of this post (2016), we have many more options in terms of domain name extensions such as .io, .net, .guru, .mob, .co, .photo, .buzz and so on. Depending on the type of business you have, you can choose a domain name that works best for your business. For example, you can be creative and choose a domain name such as slu.sh rather than slush.com. However, before taking any action at all, you need to conceive the name by which you want to be known online. When it comes to selecting domain names for a company, you need to keep your brand in mind. … [Read more...] about How to Decide Great Domain Names for your Business
