Warlords of Faff The one thing I have to give this expansion credit for is that they really have embraced the gospel of faff. There are more widgets and thing-a-ma-bobs for me to fiddle with in this expansion than any in any mmo to date. It seems like I can lose entire mornings with all of the little goals that I seem to have. Garrisons are a big portion of this, requiring just enough effort to make it worth doing… but requiring just enough time to eat up large blocks of your time. They are this glorious black hole for people who are like me and are huge fans of short term goals. On the other side of the equation there are folks who absolutely hate them, because they represent an end to the way certain portions of this game worked. For the folks that loved farming resources and then using those resources to play the auction house… unfortunately that time is over. To a lesser extent you can do this with savage blood because on … [Read more...] about WoW Xmas Wishlist
Guild transfer wow
Two years ago, in July 2012 – and thus, before Guild Wars 2 was released – there was the usual pre-launch discussion that happens with every MMO: What will the endgame be about? Will the game even have meaningful endgame? I had joined the discussion here in our blog and posted my own thoughts about it. I figured now is a good time to look at the topic again, as the game has been out for almost two years now, season 1 of the living story has finished and episode 3 of the 2nd season has just started. “One complaint about MMOs that I have seen several times is that the game worlds’ importance in MMOs is constantly diminishing.” I had mentioned that and talked about how Guild Wars 2 wants to do it differently. As we have seen by now, they were serious about that and still are. Season 1 added a lot of fights and content in the open world. Most of it was removed again after a while, but some zones were left completely changed (Lion’s Arch is the most … [Read more...] about What about Guild Wars 2’s endgame*?
You may already know the first version of this FAQ. I decided to rewrite it, update it and put newer screenshots in. So here is the new version. A very special thank you goes to Tasha Darke for reading through it all. I was hoping for a few bits of corrected grammar but she gave me very valuable feedback on top of that! This FAQ is mostly for those who have just recently heard of Guild Wars 2 and now want to know more. If you have been following the game for years or even just months, if you have pre-purchased the game and if you have already played it, you are welcome to read it as well, but you will find a lot of information that you already know. Since the game is still in development a lot of things are subject to change (yes, believe it or not, ArenaNet is handling the Beta Weekend Events like a real beta and is still changing things around). Also, new information comes out every now and then which might outdate what you can read here. If you notice any of that – or just … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2: A FAQ for new players
I’ve been teetering back and forth on whether or not I should write this post for awhile now. I honestly thought I had posted my last “WoW” weeks ago. Over the last few weeks playing another game has helped to lift the rose colored lenses I had so long for the World of Warcraft. In the past I would go off, play another game for awhile, and it would remind me of all the things I missed. This time however, all it has done is made me realize all the things I hated. Death Of PVP Rivalry Blizzard has made plenty of bad calls over the years, but it seems that recently the frequency of them keeps happening more and more often. Of all the poor choices, the one that still sticks in my craw the most is what seems like the systematic dismantling of the server community. In every MMO I have played, the server you play on is as much apart of the experience as the game itself. Those that have had thriving vibrant player communities have … [Read more...] about Is WoW the WoW-Killer?
As the month of November approached, I got to reminiscing about BlizzCon. For those of us that loved World of Warcraft and used to play it, the yearly BlizzCon event held by Blizzard was an obligatory annual MMORPG pilgrimage. Even long after I stopped playing, I would pay the $40 for the BlizzCon Virtual Ticket just to see the Blizzard artists and designers talk about their craft and a genre I love. This year I was seriously contemplating purchasing the BlizzCon 2016 PPV event dubbed by Blizzard as a cerebration of epic games and an epic community. But after reading reports that many of the World of Warcraft panels would not be live-streamed, I declined. After watching the opening ceremony and some of the panels on YouTube I am glad I didn’t waste my money. The BlizzCon that I was hoping would rekindle my passion for WoW wasn’t the BlizzCon I remembered. In the early days of BlizzCon, the fare was mostly about WoW. But the BlizzCon of today is all about e-sports and the … [Read more...] about World of Warcraft’s Diminishing Presence at BlizzCon 2016
