Ever since I was a wee lad, my life has revolved around two primary forces: video games and books. I remember my mom’s humble book shelf when I was a kid, laden with such authors as Anne McCaffrey, Mark Twain, Jean M. Auel, and a variety of others. We even had an honest to goodness Encyclopedia Britannica. We also had an Atari 2600, then an NES, and a Genesis. My neighbor Charles had an SNES, and I’d spend a good deal of time over at his place, especially during summers. Point being, these two media sources were two of my largest influences growing up. So, when I discovered LitRPG, I found myself in something akin to heaven. The first LitRPG I read, Survival Quest (The Way of the Shaman), by Vassily Mahanenko, was about a man who found himself trapped in a Virtual Reality MMORPG. Really, it was almost something more akin to the Matrix. Mahan, the main character, was described as being in a fully self enclosed pod which took care of his physical needs, while also stimulating … [Read more...] about What is LitRPG, and Why Do I Like It?

I love survival sandboxes. They give me that virtual world experience I’m missing from most MMOs. And I can build! So, why won’t I touch Atlas, the recent pirate-filled addition to genre? It’s not because I am afraid I would like the game; with only one exception, I have found something positive in every game I’ve been in. And having already extensively played ARK: Survival Evolved, whose systems were shanghaied for Atlas, I know there is plenty I could have enjoyed. But I won’t. I just can’t. It’s a personal decision. I am so frustrated with Studio WildCard/Grapeshot that I physically won’t support them financially. I can’t do it anymore. I wouldn’t even keep streaming or playing ARK any longer except that I have a crew of great people that I enjoy being with on the server I host, and I stay for them, to give them a place they want to play. They are worth it. Make no mistake though, if I could talk them all into finding a … [Read more...] about The Survivalist: Why I love survival games but refuse to touch Atlas
As I watched Nick Tarabay stand on stage hype up the audience in the Main Theater for PAX West 2018, I thought it was pretty cool that Anthem was able to get find a celebrity to introduce the game. I know Asher from Spartacus. He was great in that series. I didn’t know he was a gamer. As it turns out, he isn’t; Anthem is actually his first video game. Bummer, right? He’s the voice of Haluk in the game, but if he had no real connection to gaming, why was he there? So I took a breath to listen to the rest of the presentation and panel. I watched the video that we featured on Monday the same as everyone else, and I was hoping to hear what the story was about. I was hoping to get a better understanding of what we were actually getting into, but the video it really didn’t provide it. No, I’m wrong, it did tell me something: The story part — the most important part of the game for a lot of BioWare fans — will be limited to Fort Tarsis. … [Read more...] about The Soapbox: I have a bad feeling about Anthem
