A common question that I see posited around forums and Reddit is, “What MMO should I play?” If there is a more loaded question than that in this community, I haven’t heard it. What is usually being asked, by both newcomers and long-time players, is, “What MMO is right for me that I haven’t played yet?” While I hear you and have been there, the truth is that there is no one universal answer to that question. There are just hundreds if not thousands of MMOs, big and small, out on the market, each with its own personality, feature set, and setting. Those have to be compared and matched up with the millions of people who all have their own unique preferences. It’s what makes recommending an MMO a difficult proposition. I’m game for difficult! Today’s list won’t be “10 MMOs that I think you should play” but a rundown of how to sort through the important categories that are out there in the hopes of finding the game … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: How to find the right MMO for you

Here’s something you probably didn’t know: Online worlds researcher Dr. Richard Bartle didn’t actually write the Bartle test. His original research explored, analyzed, and defined the four player archetypes — killer, socializer, achiever, and explorer — but the test based on that paper was created a few years later by Erwin Andreasen and Brandon Downey and named in his honor. We’ve been talking a lot about Bartle’s ideas’ relevance to modern MMOs in the last month or two, so I thought it would be fun to ask the Massively OP staff and readers to take the test, share their results, and talk about what it all means in this week’s Massively Overthinking. There are, of course, some caveats. First, the Bartle test as once hosted on GamerDNA has been toast for many months now. The world will have lost an amazing resource there if it never comes back up because it included analysis and a record of scores for … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: Let’s take the classic Bartle test
The time has finally come — you know, where I start assaulting you all, my poor readers, with my impressions of Star Wars: The Old Republic from general testing over the last five months, now that the NDA for testing has been lifted. I do have plans to expand upon much of the following in future posts (as if only one gargantuan wall-of-text won’t be enough, right?) But there are quite a few thoughts I do want to toss up on here first. I took a bunch of notes throughout my testing experience, which are a mess right now and which I should really try to consolidate into something coherent. While I love the game and had a lot of fun testing, much of this ended up being the basis for the “constructive criticism” I offered up during feedback, so hopefully this impression piece will come across fair and balanced. I aim to be completely honest. Overall Thoughts You’ll probably hear this a lot, but it’s true — the first thing that came to my mind when I … [Read more...] about SWTOR Beta Test: The Obligatory General Impressions Mega-Post

Whenever I publish my income report or share how I earn money with my blog, I often use the term "affiliate marketing". Bloggers and internet marketers who have been into online marketing for years are familiar with affiliate marketing, and also with the fact that it is the most lucrative way to earn money online. In this article, I will share the basics of affiliate marketing and all the details you need to know in order to understand how affiliate marketing works. Affiliate marketing is one of the oldest forms of marketing wherein you refer someone to any online product and when that person buys the product based on your recommendation, you receive a commission. This commission varies from $1 to $10,000 depending on what product you are promoting. The most common question I hear is related to how companies track the record of who is sending the traffic and making the sales. The simple answer is with a … [Read more...] about What is Affiliate Marketing & How Does It Work?
