I love Mad Max and other post-apocalypse style books. In a way, they often feel to me like the next evolution of cyberpunk genre stories. Late stage capitalism fails, society collapses, and a few stragglers hang on by their fingernails in a world with few resources. What’s not to love? The setting of Desert Runner, by Dawn Chapman, is Puatera Online. In this virtual reality MMORPG, the technology level is mostly archaic, with a few exceptions. One of these exceptions belongs to one of the NPCs of the game, Maddie. Maddie owns a high powered automobile with which she completes jobs, otherwise known as quests, with or without the help of the “Visitors” as she and her fellow NPCs call them. What makes this story less common than most is that many of the NPCs of the Puatera Online gameworld are not only sentient, but they know that they’re programs. Those that have become self aware in this fashion often work to resist their programming and deny their … [Read more...] about Puatera Online: Desert Runner Review (LitRPG)

It’s the end of an era for MMO players this week, as Gamigo bought Trion Worlds. Technically, it appears it bought Trion’s assets, specifically the MMORPGs, as a reported 175+ employees were laid off with only 25 left behind to… well, it’s hard to see how 25 people could do much more than serve as a transition team for six MMORPGs, and it’s still not entirely clear what will be happening to all of those games long-term, particularly ArcheAge. And Halloween is this week! Read on to catch up with the very best of this week’s MMO news … [Read more...] about MMO Week in Review: Trion’s tribulations

Black Desert Online is a high fantasy, action combat MMORPG that blends theme park and sandbox elements into a huge game world, and it’s probably very well known for its graphics and aesthetics. When creating a brand new character you’ll to pick and choose from a wide variety of classes, all with unique play styles but do keep in mind that they will be gender locked. The good news is, the game does offer the gender equivalent of each class and as an example, the Male Ninja’s counterpart is the female Kunoichi. The Best Combat System Yet The game’s combat system is action based which requires you to manually face and target enemies with your reticule to engage in combat. Each of the classes has their own unique abilities and skills that need a combination of keys, or combos, to execute. There are plenty of in-game visual guides to help you through it which is great, as the learning curve can be quite high at the beginning. As you gain more … [Read more...] about Black Desert Online Review 2018: Is BDO Worth Playing?
