Several conversations I saw after our report on the new RMT mounts in Guild Wars 2 got me thinking about how the MMO community uses the word whale. I had used the word to refer to the kind of person who buys a ton of RNG-based lockboxes to get every last one of the shiny bits and bobs within, but the reality is that anyone who pays a respectable flat fee for a purely cosmetic upgrade has also been hooked on some sort of fishing rod or other, even if it’s not a harpoon. So let’s consider the numbers behind the terminology in this week’s Massively Overthinking. How much money spent makes you an MMO whale? Does it apply only to cosmetics or lockboxes? When does the “whale” term kick in for people who buy early access, collector editions, or 10 expansion boxes over the course of an MMO’s life? Are most gamers more properly dolphins or something in 2018? Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): There’s no hard number for me. In fact, for me, I … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: How much money spent makes you an MMO whale?

The Google Disavow Links tool is one of the most long-awaited and talked-about features since the Penguin update hit. Before I talk about this addition from the Google webmaster team, let’s do a bit of time-travel. At the same time this created a new problem, and that is negative SEO. Since Penguin was created to penalize any site using spam methods to generate backlinks and manipulate search engine rankings, people started to abuse this system by creating spam links for legitimate sites, in an effort to lower their rankings. Some of them succeeded. Many brands were affected by the negative SEO campaign, though others remained unaffected. This all led to the major problem of controlling the … [Read more...] about How to Remove Spam Links using Google Disavow links Tool
If you are a regular reader of ShoutMeLoud, you know that I offer many services related to blogging. Two of the most prominent are WordPress SEO and teaching blogging & SEO. I recommend the latter to all of my clients because learning SEO will be helpful to all bloggers in the long run. However, some clients have plenty of money but no time, and they prefer to take the former, which is certainly sensible for them. If you are a blogger or a person who wishes to create a future in Internet marketing, I highly recommend that you learn SEO yourself instead of hiring people to do it for you. Once you have learned the basics of SEO yourself, you can hire the right people to perform specifically related tasks for you. For example: Were you to understand SEO, you would know where you should get backlinks, how you should optimize your content, and what is missing from your blog. With this knowledge in mind, you can hire the right people to do whatever tasks you wish to delegate. There is … [Read more...] about What SEO Softwares I use For Teaching SEO
You got a growing blog? Is your server not powerful enough to support it anymore? Is it getting slower every day? Have you tried to do everything you can like minifying your scripts, adding css sprites and even caching your site? Did they work? Right now you might be out of tricks and thinking about moving to another server. But, there’s another trick you can use… Why not host the static part of your website in a Content Delivery Network (CDN)? It will not only take some of the load off your server, but it will also give a performance boost to your site! A CDN will allow you to store your data in several servers distributed around the world so if some one tries to access your site, the content which you have uploaded to the CDN will be served from the nearest server! If that data is located in your server, every client have to go to that server to access your data, some may be close but others might be at the other end of the world. So, a CDN can save a lot of time by … [Read more...] about How To Boost Your WordPress Blog With Rackspace Cloud Files!
