GET GOOD OR GET GATHERINGGuild Wars 2 has been around for an age now. Not only is it a mature MMORPG but it’s still growing. After more than six years, I can still remember finding ArenaNet’s approach to gathering mind-blowing. Like world events and mob tagging, the gathering system in Guild Wars 2 dragged us out of the dark ages. Traditional gathering systems had too often left players fighting over resources that were decidedly finite. It discouraged people from grouping up, caused spawn strife, and pushed communities, in the physical sense, apart. Guild Wars 2 introduced a way to keep players away from this competitive collecting and playing together. In a move that seems almost obvious now, ArenaNet instanced gathering nodes, materials, and collectible resources to individual players wandering the Plains of Ashford or skipping through the Streets of Divinity's Reach. advertisement I started out this weeks column with the intent of putting together a rough … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2: Playing Together or Getting Further Apart?

One of the most interesting things about EVE Online is the fact that its single shard server forces players from different countries and cultures to co-exist in the same space. In a virtual universe in which the distances and barriers between real world nations should be meaningless, players still tend to split off into geographical and cultural analogues of their home nations. Some of that is due to timezone differences, of course, but the biggest drivers of division always seem to be language-based or cultural in nature. EVE has seen plenty of real-world national identities mirrored in-game, from big American coalitions throwing their military might around and European corps working together when it suits them to Russian groups stubbornly defending their homelands from invasion no matter the cost. The Russian community in particular has always seemed pretty impenetrable to outsiders, having developed its own distinct identity over the years with its own internal culture and even … [Read more...] about EVE Evolved: What really sets Russian EVE players apart?
Now we enter the descending period of Stormblood. This isn’t exactly a bad thing or a problem or anything; it’s just the way things go. If the x.3 patch is the middle of the expansion, the x.4 and x.5 patches are the ones that close things up, tying up loose ends and getting us all ready for when things move on to the new continent. And that’s fine; we’ll all pretend to be very surprised in November when the next Final Fantasy XIV expansion is announced and someone is enraged because a favorite job isn’t included. But that’s all in a couple of months, not right now; right now we’ve got a new set of patch notes to pick apart and get excited about. And in what never should be a surprise but always somehow manages to be, there’s some fun stuff in the notes we didn’t really hear about before. So yes, we’re getting new bosses and dungeons and we don’t know all of the Alphascape encounters unless you believe the rumors, … [Read more...] about Wisdom of Nym: Picking apart Final Fantasy XIV’s patch 4.4 notes
Play SWTOR for freeI know I took more than a moment to explain why I liked the new Rishi stronghold coming to Star Wars: The Old Republic in the next big update. It seems that the development team has a little more freedom to really listen to its fans and add items to this stronghold to move it from being a good stronghold to a great one. I’ve clearly been critical of many of the things SWTOR has done over the year, and I rarely give it amazing scores on my yearly reviews. But I’m still a fan, and it’s improvements like the Rishi stronghold that help keep me interested in what BioWare developers are doing. On a scale that includes jumping the timeline forward 5 years and killing off major characters, creating a PvP stronghold ranks rather low, but I’m surprised at how much it actually helps to create an enjoyable game. The final round of PTS changes hit this past weekend, and I spent some time goofing around and diving into these additions. Let me highlight some … [Read more...] about Hyperspace Beacon: SWTOR is testing huge changes for the Rishi stronghold
