The esports juggernaut shows no signs of slowing down as this flourishing sector is poised to smash through the $1 billion barrier this year. Games like CS:GO, Dota 2, League of Legends and Overwatch have enjoyed a tremendous boost as a result of the phenomenon that is competitive gaming. It has turned gamers into multimillionaires and attracted all manner of commercial tie-ups, so developers are desperate to break into the esports scene. Yet not all games are suitable and MMO titles in particular must overcome several obstacles if they are to crack this potentially lucrative market. The most successful games in the esports arena are multiplayer online battle arena titles like LoL and Dota 2. First person shooters like CS:GO and Call of Duty are thriving too, with teams like Astralis becoming rich and famous as a result of their successes over the past year. Now Fortnite, which became the most popular game in the world in 2018, is bidding to muscle in. The battle royale … [Read more...] about Will MMO Games Have a Greater Influence on Esports Going Forward?

It’s been nearly a year since I met with Frostkeep Studios at PAX West and got an early first-hand look at Rend, the three-faction fantasy survival sandbox with a timer. And I’ve been waiting since then to be able to play for myself; I saw the housing and learned about pet taming, and knew I wanted in. Even though I don’t play PvP for PvP’s sake, I liked the sounds of its implementation in Rend. And the whole thing about the temporary lifespan of the server? Newer information (namely that I can use ascension points to keep my favorite pets with me!) has helped alleviate that trepidation. And now, finally, I’m in! The question is, what do I think about it? It is still in development — it is only closed beta at the moment — and it shows. But there is also promise. I already know I am going to be playing it more. Here are my first impressions of surviving in Rend. First first impression It’s unusual for me, but I am giving the music its own … [Read more...] about The Survivalist: Hands-on with survival MMO Rend’s closed beta
When you work in video games, you often get asked what new titles you are looking forward to. While experience has been teaching me to temper my enthusiasm, I do have one that I’m excited to play. I first got to experience Dual Universe in-person at PAX West last September, and since then I’ve been eagerly anticipating its release! Why? That title pretty summed it up well: It’s a persistent, seamless, sandbox universe. More than that even, it is a hotbed of creativity thanks to its voxel foundation. So I’ve had a taste of what can happen in a world that customizable, and I hunger for more! That meeting with Jean-Christophe Baillie, the president and founder of NovaQuark, was seven months ago. How has development been coming along since then? How does the game look today? I got to sit down with Baillie for an update on progress and a new tour through the universe a few weeks ago. In my first demo, I saw promise. This time, I saw more of that promise … [Read more...] about Massively OP Interview: Dual Universe demo shows off advances in city building, space travel
“Soon, stones of fire will rain down. Flames shall scorch the land. The burned out plains will slowly freeze, ushering in a long, cruel ice age.” – Azala Welcome back to Topdeck Tutor, friends! Now that MTG Arena’s Closed Beta is in full swing, I and Colton are sharing an account for work/streaming purposes, so we can produce content like this, just for you. Today, we’re featuring a R/G Dino deck, that I have named “Dino Pancakes”. It’s not perfect, but it is reasonably easy to build, taken off the back of the stock R/G deck, but modified in a few important ways for efficiency/dino stomping. This deck even has theme music. So enjoy this delightful music while you read: In card games, there are two routes to take when building a deck. You either build for fun, or you build what wins matches. Sometimes, there’s some overlap. Not often enough, but that’s the way MTG works. However, as I began my adventure in MTG Arena, … [Read more...] about Topdeck Tutor: R/G Dinos (MTG: Arena)
Kotaku put out a piece this week on how to game without wrecking your body, something that’s probably bound to come up in the average MMORPG player’s life. It’s filled with basic tips like “drink water, ya moron” and “sit up straight” and “don’t eat garbage” and “look at stuff other than the screen” but there are also some useful tips in there like “stretch before you binge” – including your hips and wrists, which you might otherwise overlook. For this week’s Overthinking, I’ve asked the writers to expound on two things: first, the most unhealthiest video gaming moment or habit they’ve ever had, and second, one specific thing they do to keep themselves from completely destroying their bodies when their hobby has become their career. Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Ah man, this one’s going to be kind of boring. For me, the unhealthiest gaming moment was probably my first … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: How do you maintain your health while binging MMORPGs?
