So with the recent announcement of 75% of the “Season 2” DLC being canceled, and Tabata’s departure from Square Enix, I feel that it’s time to finally put a cap on the somewhat infamous entry in the Final Fantasy series. From its somewhat rocky and overly long development, to its reception and the follow up patches and DLC, it’s been a heck of a ride for Noctis and the boys. One that I personally have enjoyed but has also generating an overwhelming amount of spite and anger in the fan base as well. Maybe not as much as Final Fantasy XIII did, but it would not be wrong to call XV a base breaker. This probably has a lot more to do with how the game was developed than what it actually ended up being. Announced in 2006 as a side game to Final Fantasy XIII titled “Final Fantasy Versus XIII” (Along with Final Fantasy Agito XIII which eventually became Type-0), the project was set up to be developed by the Kingdom Hearts team and … [Read more...] about The Legend of Final Fantasy XV: A Post-Mortem

NCSoft, the team behing Blade and Soul, Aion, WildStar, Lineage and more have revealed their plan to release a new PC MMORPG – yes, you heard that correctly: PC MMORPG – not a mobile port, not a mobile remastering.. A PC Aion MMORPG set in the Aion world. As of right now specifics are being kept under wraps as it is supposed to be kept “top secret”. All that is known thus far is that it is an MMORPG built on Unreal Engine 4 in the Aion universe. This came to light with the recent job opening from NCSoft describing a new “next-generation console and PC MMORPG” project, utilizing 3DS Max to “create character / monster / animation resources for the concept and development environment.” Unreal Engine 4 has given us some of the best looking games to date, with games like ARK: Survival Evolved, the new Final Fantasy VII Remake, Geare of War 4, Injustice 2, Kingdom Hearts III, Octopath Traveler and more. Below is an example of what Unreal … [Read more...] about NCSoft Working On New Aion MMORPG Made With Unreal Engine 4!
I am once again starting this post ahead of my normal morning routine because there is just too much stuff to cover for me to cram it all in without a little pre-work. As a result some of my tenses might go haywire given that I am at least in theory writing parts of this at different times. Hopefully you will bear with me, because it feels like the conferences are way more tightly stacked than they have been in past years. On Monday June 11th we had Square Enix, Ubisoft, PC Gaming Show and the Sony presser and I am attempting to cover at least all of the things that interested me from each. Square Enix – 1 pm EST This one was a bit of a let down and did not follow the standard E3 press junket format, but instead reminded me an awful lot of a Nintendo Direct. Instead of a bunch of commentary connecting the clips we just got a rapid fire succession of trailers back to back. The truth is… there just wasn’t a lot here that really interested … [Read more...] about E3 Monday Roundup: Square Enix/Ubisoft/PC Gaming/Sony
Final Fantasy XIV is my favorite modern MMORPG. I’m reluctant to say favorite MMORPG, because I grew up playing Dark Age of Camelot and EverQuest, so both of those games will hold an extra special place in my heart. There’s a lot to love about FF14, namely its gorgeous graphics, unique multi classing system, adorable emotes, countless glamors, and excellent late game boss mechanics. It also has the best player housing system I’ve seen in an MMORPG, but I haven’t seen the new homesteads in Elder Scrolls Online, which I heard was great. The one thing that nags me about FF14 though is that each job has zero actual customization. This means that every single Black Mage has access to the exact same set of skills. In fact, there’s ZERO difference between every max level black mage in the game. That’s right; zero class customization. Most people don’t criticize this feature because the class system overall is pretty great, as everyone can play EVERY … [Read more...] about Menu
