You know that old chestnut about how the greatest trick the devil ever pulled was convincing the world he didn’t exist? The greatest trick Guild Wars 2 ever pulled was convincing people that it never raised its level cap. Before you go back and double-check, yes, I’m making a point here. That statement is, at face value, completely accurate. The level cap was 80 when it launched, and it remains 80 now in the game’s second expansion, and it’ll probably be 80 in a decade when we’re on the third expansion. (I jest.) Numerically, the level cap has remained fixed. The thing is, though, that there are still just as definitely endgame areas and higher-level areas, and the game’s universal and ubiquitous level scaling doesn’t change that fact. So let’s talk a bit about relevance, what it means, and how something isn’t relevant just because you can’t out-level it. You know, light and simple stuff for the day after a holiday. … [Read more...] about Vague Patch Notes: Accessibility vs. relevance in MMORPGs

A long time ago, I published a “Lotro vs. WoW vs. Rift” piece and I figured it’s time to revisit this topic, but with the games I’m currently playing: Rift (things have changed, so it deserves an update), Guild Wars 2 and Trove. Before you want to smack me: Yes, I am well aware that those three games are very different from each other and they all have something special that the others can’t offer. So of course, I will not tell you which game is superior. Also, please keep in mind that Trove is still in open beta and gets new stuff added fairly regularly, Rift is already several years old with two expansions and Guild Wars 2, while not exactly a baby on the market anymore, will receive its first expansion this year. I’m writing this to show you which game offers what in which gameplay area, so that you can make a choice of which game to play if you want to give one of them a try. I personally play all three of these games regularly and I play them … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2 vs. Rift vs. Trove: Part 1 (Basic information)

Dear Microsoft, there’s no doubt that Outlook.com (previously Windows Live Hotmail, Microsoft Hotmail) is cooler than Gmail or Yahoo! Mail. But you know what? Gmail (or Google Mail) is way ahead of any other e-mail service when it comes to productivity. I’m using Gmail ever since they launched as an invite-only beta release and it’s Gmail and not Hotmail or Yahoo! Mail that redefined the way I use an e-mail service. That said, as a Microsoft fanatic I finally migrated to Outlook.com from Gmail last year even though I was aware that I’m not going to get all the features I enjoy from Google Mail. But that migration was part of my break-free from Google as I was too obsessed with Google products. So today, I would like to compare Outlook.com vs. Gmail vs. Yahoo! Mail to revisit the features I enjoyed at Gmail that “Hotmail…”, err, “Outlook” doesn’t support. You’ve compared Outlook.com with Gmail and Yahoo! Mail with a bias … [Read more...] about Gmail vs. Hotmail vs. Yahoo! Mail: An Ultimate Comparison
