I saw a thought-provoking exchange on Reddit this week that’s too good to sit on. It was in a thread for an MMORPG in which players were complaining about rampant ganking in said MMORPG. Here we go. How many times have you seen this exact argument? I mean, really both of these dudes have a fair point. The game in question – like nearly every other MMO that includes some form of free-for-all open PvP – intentionally advertises itself to lots of different niches. Yes, it markets itself as having old-school PvP, but it also markets itself as having PvE, dungeons, housing, crafting, and so forth, because it wants more than just PvP players to buy and populate it. People hear the part they want to hear. Wolves-vs.-sheep templates aside, everyone who shows up really does have a dramatically different idea of what the game actually is and what they’re expected to be doing in it most of the time. In my estimation, it’s one of the core problems with MMO sandboxes … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: Do you approach all MMOs with PvP as ‘PvP games’?
Mmo with housing
Massively Overpowered’s end-of-the-year 2018 awards continue today with our award for Best MMO Player Housing, which was awarded to WildStar last year. And the year before that. Sigh. MMORPGs eligible for this award may have launched in any year as long as they are still alive and still offer player housing; nominees should be judged based on the quality and depth of that feature and that feature alone. Don’t forget to cast your own vote in the just-for-fun reader poll at the very end! The Massively OP staff pick for the Best MMO Player Housing of 2018 is… EverQuest II and RIFT Brianna Royce (@nbrianna, blog): Here’s the thing: A lot of big MMOs have housing now. But most of them treat it as a vanity toy, an achievement thing, a cash shop cow, a farming zone. Older games still have the best MMORPG housing, the kind where the housing is super intricate and meaningful and creative. I couldn’t decide between RIFT and EverQuest II, so … [Read more...] about Massively OP’s 2018 Awards: Best MMO Player Housing of 2018
There are many things I want and expect from MMOs and one thing is housing. I love feeling as if I was in a virtual world and for me, having a little home in there that I can customize is just part of it. I’ve been what I call a “housing tourist” in some MMOs… this is like an MMO tourist who travels through MMOs always looking for “the perfect one”, only that I did not check out the MMOs themselves, but mainly the housing features, hoping to find an MMO that satisfies my needs when it comes to player housing. So I decided to start this little series giving short introductions to housing in some of the MMOs I’ve been playing. I will try to give relatively short overviews of how housing works in each of those MMOs. The first one will be the first MMO with housing that I played: Lord of the Rings Online. This is my house. I had first played Lotro during their open beta for a short bit. The setting was great, but it didn’t offer me more than … [Read more...] about Housing in MMOs: Lord of the Rings Online
This is the full version of entries that have been published in the last week! I just thought it might be nicer to have everything in one huge entry instead of in separate ones (either way: You can find all entries in the category labelled “rift vs. lotro vs. wow” on the right). The topic I wrote some time ago about “Rift vs. LotRO” is still getting readers almost every day. Unfortunately, it is probably not the kind of topic they were looking for. So, since I’ve played both games (at least for a little while), I thought I would make an elaborate posting about those games. I’m also going to throw in World of Warcraft because, apart from playing it as well, the big majority of MMO gamers have played the game or know something about the game, at least. :) (After starting to write this, I realised how long this entry would be in the end and decided to split it into different topics to be posted separately. So expect a posting every day for the next few … [Read more...] about Rift vs. LotRO vs. World of Warcraft – a closer look at all three MMOs (all entries in one)
Let’s talk about value. A couple of weeks back, I did an article on the healthiest games at the end of the year; today, I’m talking about the best value for the money. Isn’t that the same thing? No, it isn’t. Because health is about “what games have the most robust community and are most likely to be around next year,” but value is about “where can you get the most for the least money on a reliable basis.” And while there is a fair amount of overlap, it isn’t a one-for-one comparison. You may recall we did this last year as well. This year, there have been some pretty significant shakeups, due in no small part to the fact that the value-for-your-money in some titles has gone down, and at least one title from last year’s list has outright closed. So let’s take a fresh look at the games giving you solid value for your dollars. Let’s even say ten of them, arranged in list format. 1. Final Fantasy XIV This hasn’t … [Read more...] about Perfect Ten: The MMOs with the best value at the start of 2018
