Video games had a huge impact on my childhood and teenage years, imprinting themselves onto my psyche for all of the struggles and elation that they produced. While I did play consoles in my youth, most of my gaming time was spent on the PC, particularly during the 1990s. As such, I have a strong fondness (nostalgia goggles alert!) for older games, to the point where I still play and blog about them. While some definitely have not withstood the test of time, you’d be surprised how many older PC titles are still quite enjoyable and even downright compelling today. Leading QA & Localisation specialist Testronic has launched a new initiative to encourage more women into the games industry. The Testronic 50% Initiative is the brainchild of Ann Hurley, the company’s Head of New Business – Games West Europe. She is also an Ambassador of the Women in Games Group and has worked in the games industry for over 20 years. “We’ve called this the Testronic 50% Initiative because, despite females accounting for half of all gamers, in the UK – and many other regions, too – just 14% of those working in the industry itself are women*. We believe that figure should be closer to 50%” explained Hurley. “At Testronic we buck the trend in some areas – 40% of our management team based out of London and Warsaw are female, while 42% of our localisation QA team are women. Pearl Abyss, the creator of the MMO Black Desert Online, have announced that it will acquire Iceland-based CCP Games. CCP Games is well known for being the creators of the insanely popular space MMORPG EVE Online. Through this deal, CCP Games will still operate independently from Pearl Abyss, operating their Shanghai, London and Reykjavik studios. Based in South Korea, Pearl Abyss has seen record-high sales in 2018, specifically following the launch of Black Desert Online in Korea.
