I have vague memories of ArenaNet talking about Guild Wars 2 taverns prior to its launch and how these spaces would be more than window dressing. Maybe that was a dream or something, but I’ve always respected the effort to make one of the most iconic of RPG locations — the tavern meeting place — more useful and engaging. Warhammer Online, too, was touting tavern brawls that would take place as public events. We’re so conditioned to run in and out of such places that unless we are roleplaying for some reason, chances are we never stay for more than a few seconds. And that’s kind of a shame, because I like the idea of players spending some time in bars unwinding. I heard a myth of a dead MMO that used to put such an emphasis on this, but it was probably all bunk. What could MMO taverns do to get you to stick around? Would you hang out for minigames, gambling, special events, or special buffs? Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up with … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: What could MMO taverns do to get you to stick around?
Following the success of the Singing Grotto community roleplay, we welcome you to The Arcanist’s Mill. The previous thread reached over fifty posts which to a newcomer might seem daunting. As the characters moved from the Singing Grotto to the Arcanist's Mill in the last thread they will return, though this new location presents opportunity for others to join in the fun. You can read the previous roleplay here at The Singing Grotto. There are no rules to a tavern roleplay, and you don’t need experience to join in. Simply pull up a chair, order a drink and let your imagination rule the night. We are very welcoming to roleplayers of all abilities. Situated in the town of Kuasrine, The Arcanist’s Mill has been a favoured haunt of mages from the nearby Academy and surrounding lands for decades. There are maybe nicer taverns, though the prices here are more reasonable. From the outside it looks enchanting, pleasant and cheerful. Clay and marble pillars make up most of the … [Read more...] about [Tavern Roleplay] The Arcanist’s Mill

Blizzard announced over the weekend that Hearthstone has hit the 100 million player mark. A little over five years ago, a few Blizzard Entertainment developers were toiling away on a small passion project: Hearthstone, a free-to-play digital collectible card game at a time when such games were not front of mind for most. They based the game on the company’s Warcraft universe and polished every aspect—from the flash of the animations to the bombastic voice lines of the heroes—and launched it to critical acclaim globally in 2014. As a way of commemorating Hearthstone’s 100-million-player milestone and thanking players everywhere for bringing the game to life, Blizzard is holding a special in-game event from November 7 through 11. During the 100 Million Players Celebration event, players who log in to the game will receive a one-time reward of six free packs from the most recent expansion set, The Boomsday … [Read more...] about Hearthstone Welcomes 100 Million Players To The Virtual Tavern
