When New World was announced back in 2016, the MMO community went to work dissecting everything, from its PvP system to its business model – and yes, we even ruminated on the potential risks of setting a game in a place and point in time with a potentially ugly colonial undertone. So it’s no great surprise that when mainstream journos got their hands on the game, they’re now getting around to having that same “oh, wow, yeah, that could be bad if not handled well” moment. For example, MOP reader Thurber pointed us to a piece on Polygon arguing that even though Amazon has mixed things up – added a supernatural element, removed indigenous people – the world players are tasked with still looks like colonial America and has zombie-like monsters to defeat, resulting in what the author deems a “sanitized re-enactment of the European colonization of the Americas and elsewhere” – “a manifestation of the great white fantasy of … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: Are you concerned about New World’s setting?

Beginning on December 20th, all players who have reached level three or higher will be able to unlock a story-driven adventure through Crossout’s wasteland. There will also be a limited-time New Year’s event that lasts until January 14th, where players can get New Year’s decor for vehicles that increase the experience points gained in battle. The new Adventure Mode offers three types of tasks: Awakening is a multi-hour story campaign that unveils some of the darkest secrets of Crossout and the world in which the game takes place. It is played on a massive map, which can be freely explored. The story campaign itself can only be completed once, but players can always join other survivors in co-operative mode to assist them with their current story task. Off-Roads are a collection of secondary tasks scattered across the map Adventure plays on. Players can find different jobs there, including the destruction of raiders, the collection of cargo or even scouting … [Read more...] about Crossout Receives Adventure Story Mode and New Year’s Events
If you’re hungry for even more New World previews, then PCGamesN has another take on the same demo that outlets got to experience at last week’s Gamescom. The main thrust of the article — and of Amazon’s PR arm — centers around New World’s “large-scale territory wars” that have the potential to expand up to 10,000 players in the future. Although players won’t be fighting in mass battles all of the time, they will be using forts quite often as sanctuaries against the harsh landscape outside. If adventurers get too far away from a fort, they can set up a temporary camp that will, among other benefits, serve as a respawn point. “New World offers a positive, progressive spin on a genre that is often fixated on apocalyptic scenarios and scrambling for survival in a world already beyond long-term rescue,” the article concludes. “Here, instead, there are the foundations of an expansive, player-driven society which is as … [Read more...] about New World’s forts and campfires will be your sanctuaries against the darkness
Play EVE Online for freeA few months ago, I created a new character and ran through the new player experience for an article on how to get new players to stick with EVE Online. One of the first things I did was change some of the default settings, followed by re-arranging the chat windows, modifying the overview settings, and fixing the camera field of view. I’d usually dismiss this as me just being used to having the screen set up just the way I like it, but the truth is that the default settings new players are exposed to could really stand some improvement. At the same time, there are a few gameplay changes that would undoubtedly help improve EVE Online‘s long-term retention of new players if CCP Games would commit to investigating them. War declarations need a serious overhaul to allow groups of friends to safely form social corporations, for example, and lone players should ideally be directed more forcefully toward corporate recruitment. In this edition of EVE … [Read more...] about EVE Evolved: Four changes to improve EVE Online for new players
Gambling and gaming are two sides of the same coin. You guys wouldn’t believe how many gambling companies request to put ads on MOP every month (unsuccessfully!), so clearly advertisers believe there’s plenty of overlap in the groups. And the debate over gambling in video games – whether we’re talking about lockbox monetization schemes or watching bureaucrats home in on skin gambling – isn’t going away. In fact, it’s about to get much bigger as gamblers are walloped from still another direction. This week the Supreme Court effectively overturned PASPA – the 1992 Professional and Amateur Sports Protection Act – in deciding Murphy v. National Collegiate Athletic Association. The ruling hinged on the section of PASPA that basically barred local governments from licensing betting on sports games, reserving that power for the federal government. The act had been interpreted to include e-sports once e-sports became a thing as well. The … [Read more...] about Expect e-sports betting to blossom thanks to new Supreme Court ruling
