Blizzard has rolled out a new World of Warcraft: Battle for Azeroth build that is paving the way for the future addition of War Mode, the open world "toggle-able" PvP experience coming with the expansion. Game designer 'Phalanx' has posted some brief facts about four different aspects of War Mode, including the brand new Bounty Hunting feature. During War Mode, players will have Honor Talents enabled as they do when entering instanced PvP. Once War Mode is toggled by a player in a capital city, Honor Talents become active and remain so for the entire time the player is flagged for PvP. During PvP combat, gear will be scaled to a roughly equivalent level between combatants. If a player's gear is better than the opponent, they will still have a slight advantage, but a reasonable one. Players will earn Conquest during World PvP, a nice addition to the pool of activities where Conquest can be earned. The more opponents a player kills during War Mode, the more likely they … [Read more...] about New War Mode Details Revealed
Some brand-new level-50 content is coming to Project Gorgon in the form of War Caches, a new feature coming in the game’s next update. The premise goes like this: The Ilmari desert was once the site of a massive war in which the Crone Hegemony built massive bunkers that are now buried deep beneath the desert sands, though the regional windstorms occasionally unearth them. Sir Johnson in Amulna is looking for adventurers to venture into these temporarily accessible bunkers in search of “a special metal that was often left behind.” As far as the mechanics of the system are concerned, players will accept War Cache quests from Sir Johnson, who will provide them with a treasure map that leads to the entrance of one of these bunkers, which are described as “mini-dungeons” that are designed to take about 15 minutes to complete, and successfully completing War Cache quests will reward players with loot as well as a voucher that can be redeemed for equipment, which … [Read more...] about Project Gorgon previews its new War Cache dungeon feature in latest developer blog
Last month Arenanet held a Guild Wars 2 campaign called Friend/Ships, asking players to send in their stories of forming friendly relationships in the popular MMO. The campaign brought in tons of stories from gamers who made new friends and even some who went on to tie the knot. This week I managed to get in touch with Elisabeth Cardy from Arenanet for a quick Q&A regarding the Friend/Ships campaign. Let’s see how it went. Q. How did the name “Friend/Ships” for the campaign come about? Elisabeth Cardy: When we first started brainstorming around this campaign, it was based on stories we’d heard of people who had met their significant other in game, but we really wanted to recognize that it’s not just romantic relationships that can have a deep impact on our lives. To that end, we were looking for a title that encompassed relationships of all sorts. Especially in English, the word “relationship” can have some hefty connotations of romance, so … [Read more...] about Arenanet Talks: Guild Wars 2 Friend/Ship Campaign

The developers of Guild Wars 2 have managed to create an MMORPG that is a truly social experience – Practically every aspect of the game rewards you for working with other players. See someone dead or about to be out in the field? Help them out and gain experience for doing so. All classes have the ability to revive other players and NPCs within the game. Need to kill a monster, but someone else is already killing it? No problem! Just help the person already in combat, and you both get experience, and both get your own loot. No kill stealing or monster hoarding needed! This mechanic is in place even if you aren’t in a party together. Want to gather materials on the map, like ore from mining nodes? No worries here either! All ore nodes are player-specific, so even if someone else has just come along and mind that node you wanted, you can too! GW2’s “Dynamic Event” system is also geared towards cooperation between players, with a large variety of events, … [Read more...] about Guild Wars 2: Is It The Best MMORPG Social Experience?
