As promised Pearl Abyss splashed out for its Festa event in South Korea this weekend, with big announcements for local and global fans of Black Desert. Let’s get the weird news out of the way first: BDO’s getting a 50-man battle royale mode this winter (it’ll roll out to us at some point after the Korean launch). “In this mode, every player starts as a Black Spirit and needs to find a fallen adventurer and possess it,” PA and Kakao say. “By destroying nearby supply crates and defeating mobs players can accumulate equipment and skills. When everyone is killed except for one survivor, the game ends with a victory message.” Now to the predictable news, since Kakao had already teased it: The Archer is launching December 12th. That’s in all regions, mind you. Expect to be able to roll the new toon with this week’s patch. That patch will also deliver an experience boost event, a free butler, a new starting cutscene, and storyline … [Read more...] about Black Desert outlines plans for the Archer, battle royale mode, and the O’dyllita expansion
Literally nothing is sacred, and no video game franchise seems capable of escaping the pull of the battle royale, as my trip to a kiddie arcade proved this weekend. Not even PAC-MAN is safe. Strange to me, however, is that so few existing MMORPGs have sidled up to the subgenre. We see MOBAs and shooters tacking it on left and right, and yeah, games like Maverick are working on bridging the genres, but nothing in existing MMOs. It’s weird, right? It seems like it would be super easy to just whip up a new battle royale battleground or arena in MMOs with PvP sidegames. They’re made for this sort of enclosed PvP minigame. Battle royale does nothing for me, but dang, it’d be nice to see some MMOs get a cut of that easy money, which I’m sure they’d reinvest back into the RPG part of the game. Right, guys? Guys?? Do you want to see battle royale in any live MMORPGs? Which one might best be suited for it? Every morning, the Massively Overpowered writers team up … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: Do you want to see a battle royale mode in any live MMORPGs?
[Closed Beta registration] Fractured Lands, a new first-person shooter, last-man-standing game, will launch on PC in paid Steam Early Access this summer. The game is developed by Unbroken Studios, a team of veterans who worked on franchises including Battlefield, Medal of Honor, and Call of Duty. Fractured Lands is an intense, drive-to-survive death-match where the sound of pounding hearts is drowned out by the roar of a sea of engines. Strewn across a post-apocalyptic wasteland lie weapons, gear, and fuel players need to be victorious. Beat down, gun down, and run down others to be the final one standing. Rise from the ashes of a world gone mad and become a deadly road warrior. Out-drive and out-gun a myriad of survivors in high-octane multiplayer manhunts where vehicular warfare injects a breakneck sense of speed and strategy into the Battle Royale landscape. Your vehicle is your greatest weapon, strongest armor and lifeline out in the wastelands. It can be mounted with scavenged … [Read more...] about – Post-apocalyptic battle royale with focus on vehicular warfare announced
Last week, following Epic’s announcement that PvE-centric Fortnite would be getting a PvP-centric battle royal mode its paying PvE players apparently didn’t want (but that’s OK because it’s free?), we all rolled our eyes at the transparent attempt to capitalize on the runaway success of PlayerUnknown’s Battlegrounds. Developer Bluehole, however, did more than that: In a press release, it all but accused Epic of ripping off the mode and suggested it’d be contemplating some sort of action against the company, causing a market run on virtual popcorn as everyone watched two massive video game companies prepare for a possible legal war over what seemed to many gamers to be a pretty old game trope. But in a new PC Gamer interview, Bluehole has since clarified its position: It’s not about the games’ shared ideas but about Epic specifically. “This is not about the battle royale game mode itself,” VP/EP Changhan Kim told PC Gamer. … [Read more...] about PUBG dev argues Fortnite spat is about Epic and Unreal Engine’s conflicts, not about owning the battle royal genre
