This is not a question about wipes in general. If the first wipe in a Final Fantasy XIV dungeon happens with a veteran party with plenty of gear because the healer just doesn’t feel like focusing on healing, the first one is exceedingly irritating. If the first wipe happens on an early pull but everyone other than me is new and it’s a tricky dungeon, I’m happy to just explain everything to the group. No, this is about the wipes you get when your entire World of Warcraft raid group lines up outside the boss, you pull, and… you wipe. And then you get back up, cast your buffs, discuss what happened, and… you wipe again. Third pull, discussion happens again, and the pull happens again and everyone dies a third time. You get the idea. In other words, this is about the threshold for irritation when the group isn’t just wiping, but wiping repeatedly with little to no indication that you’re actually making forward progress. It can be … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: How long does it take for wipes to bother you in an MMO?

The Pantheon Twitter account strikes again with asking good questions. This time they ask: How long does it take you to create a character, are you someone who takes a while to get it just right or do you blow through and create any old character just to get into the game as fast as you can? That's an awesome question with multiple avenues to explore. First, it depends on character creation options. Stats & Starter Choices If an MMO has starter stats or some form of decision making process right at character creation, then I'm going to take some time thinking things over. Let’s be real here, there’s no question in anyone’s mind that DayZ has been in early access far longer than it should be. By the same token, I don’t think anyone would begrudge Radical Heights for still being in early access. But somewhere between those two extremes lie a large number of games, some of whom have been in ostensible early access for months, some of which have been there for years, and so forth. In many ways, early access is like the new version of the game in perpetual open beta; there were many free-to-play games that never technically launched, just stayed in open beta forever until they finally shut down. And yet those games were selling things normally, making the distinction between launch and open beta into a very blurry and nebulous thing. Early access is already blurry, since it asks for money for a game that is decidedly early in its development cycle. So what do you think, dear readers? How long is too long for early access? Is there a … [Read more...] about The Daily Grind: How long is too long for early access?
