No Man’s Sky is one of those games that will be hard to forget by the gaming community over time. It was hyped up so much by everyone on it – Hello Games the developers, and by Sony their publishers. For a small studio, at the time what they were showing off looked impressive. Better still, what was promised sounded alluring. And eventually at release, we all know and remember how it all went pear shaped. This month, NMS seems to be picking up steam again, as the next major update is incoming, and we look at how different the game has become since launch. Admitting Mistakes Were Made You remember Sean Murray don’t you? Many call him a conman (still do). Harsh perspective from parts of the community, but as developer and the face of Hello Games, Sean said it all. It was through his preview events and videos that much was promised – like multiplayer being available at launch chiefly among others – when when it didn’t turn out as stated, he took the … [Read more...] about 3 Ways No Man’s Sky Improved Since Launch

Trademarks, copyrights, and patents: What they mean for you and for video games
Has the pace of news moved so quickly that we’ve already forgotten about Brendan “PlayerUnknown” Greene’s statement that video games lack any IP copyright protection? Because that was really ridiculous. Especially since what he was referring to was not actually even remotely related to copyright, but covered something that would be handled via patent. And even that wouldn’t have worked! Of course, you can’t really blame him. By which I mean you can totally blame him, but it’s a common misconception that turns up time and again. People talk about copyright, trademark, and patent issues in the same general melange of “this company owns this,” and the thing is that they’re related terms and concepts that nevertheless mean very, very different things. If it needs to be pointed out, I am not a lawyer and definitely not an attorney working in this particular field, which is complex, multifaceted, and the sort of law that employs … [Read more...] about Trademarks, copyrights, and patents: What they mean for you and for video games
Korean Hacker Sentenced to a Year in Prison + Blizzard Patents Replay System
Overwatch is in the news today with a pair of interesting stories. In one, a South Korean hacker was sentenced to a year in prison and two years probation for a cheating program that "violates the country's Game Industry Promotion Law". In the other, Blizzard has received an approved patent for a Play of the Game system after originally filing for it in 2016. The South Korean player is the first to receive a prison sentence after the country enacted strict anti-cheating laws that came on the books late in 2017. The convicted man reportedly made $180,000 through sales of his cheating program. Prior to his sentencing, others charged with violating the new policies had been fined or given probation. A Play of the Game System is now officially patented in Blizzard's name after a 2-year wait. "The game server then selects a play of the game category and determines the top aggregated score for that category. Once determined, the game server sends one or more instructions to the game … [Read more...] about Korean Hacker Sentenced to a Year in Prison + Blizzard Patents Replay System
6 things Star Trek Online does poorly
Now that I’m back in Star Trek Online and spending a lot of time going back through the storylines and building up a new ship, I’m convinced all over again that this MMORPG has really become a gem in the industry. I know it gets some flak for its lockboxes and cash shop, but honestly it doesn’t bother me that much or seem that prohibitive. There are so many great aspects of the game, yet I cannot help but see six areas that definitely need improvement. Let’s gripe! 1. Cutscene glitches and lip syncing Star Trek Online gets a lot of points in my book for going to great lengths to secure the actual actors from the show and for doing a whole lot of voice acting (in fact, I would say that STO has the most voice acting by the original cast of any IP-related MMO ever made, unless I’m forgetting a glaring oversight). Yet it often squanders that with abysmal lip syncing and visual glitches during cutscenes. The mission briefing screens are fine, but any time the … [Read more...] about 6 things Star Trek Online does poorly
