Entropia Universe is a free to play, open world sandbox MMORPG that has been around for a very long time. It’s a classic and unlike most other MMORPGs. What makes it different? The simulation-driven gameplay is a factor, as the game emphasizes exploration of player selected home planets for character growth and progression. But beneath the gameplay surface, there’s more than meets the eye when it comes to this particular MMORPG. It’s been out for 14 years, and here’s why we think it has been able to stay alive amidst the competition in a saturated MMO market. You Can Earn Real Cash Perhaps the biggest ‘X-Factor’ that makes Entropia Universe unique is that the entire game is based around real cash economy. Every item in game has a real cash value, and players can sell them to other players to earn the in-game currency called PED (Project Entropia Dollar), which they can then cash out into their real bank accounts in USD. At present time, 10 PED … [Read more...] about Why You Should Check Out Entropia Universe 2019

It’s fair to say that MapleStory always did appeal to an audience that was into a very specific look and feel. If chibi anime designs, frantic big-number combat, and goofy storylines were your thing, then you have more than your fill here. Now that MapleStory 2 is taking the franchise to 3-D when it officially launches on October 10th, the MMO-starved west seems to be taking a surprisingly serious look at Nexon’s latest offering. I’ll admit that I was curious as well. The cheerful design, enthusiastic community, and constant communication from the dev team that I saw over the past few months gradually warmed me up to the idea of trying MapleStory 2. So when I was offered a chance to take part in the head start, I gladly engaged to satisfy my curiosity. So what is MapleStory 2 like? Is it too childish for grown-up gamers, too simplistic for elitist number crunchers, and too unorthodox to be real competition for the fantasy MMO market out there? Yes, yes, yes… but … [Read more...] about MassivelyOP’s first impressions of MapleStory 2, Nexon’s latest MMORPG
In March of last year, MOP’s Justin wrote a detailed guide to the most common death penalties in MMORPGs. Last September, Gamasutra pulled seven game developers together to discuss the most effective gaming “fail states,” several of which involve death. Both articles came rushing back to me this week when Crowfall revisited the subject of its own death penalty, which involves a brief ghost period and a fast-track trip to the temple for resurrection. This week, I’ve asked the MOP writers to consider MMOs and non-MMOs and propose their own favorite death penalty. Is it an old one, a new one, or one no one’s done at all? What’s the best way to implement death in a modern MMORPG? Andrew Ross (@dengarsw): Since I’ve been back in both Asheron’s Call 1&2, I’m dealing with two kinds of extremes. AC1 is pretty punishing; AC2 is… not so much. However, I was also playing some of LISA, the Painful RPG. Not so … [Read more...] about Massively Overthinking: Death and dying in MMORPGs

The British Board of Blog Classification (Game Plot Revelation Committee) has classified this post as Spoiler Free for the single player story of ‘Mass Effect 3’. Please refrain from any revelations in the comments, especially about that bit where that thing happens. I mean I was all totally like “NO WAY!”, and the game was all totally like “WAY!”, and then when the thing turned out not to be that thing but the other thing? Definitely don’t tell anyone about that. Though I was a bit disappointed when it all turned out to be a dream. Like much of the rest of the galaxy I’ve been desperately fighting off the Reapers in Mass Effect 3, but I haven’t got terribly far in the story yet, so there really won’t be any spoilers. If you’d manage to insulate yourself from ME3 information so completely that “fighting off the Reapers” is a surprise, I apologise for ruining the first 17 seconds of the introduction. One … [Read more...] about I like to play blackjack. I’m not addicted to gambling, I’m addicted to sitting in a semi-circle.
